Default 2000 A8...scrap it?

Hi All,

We own an A8 with 204,000 miles, which was running great until this week.

The trans is slipping badly. We had serviced the tranny at 110k miles and then again at 200k miles. All was good. Then it started slipping. We serviced the trans again and found the pan contaminated with lots of metal fragments. We replaced filters and Audi oil hoping for the best, but still slipping badly.

We love the car and it is in great shape. My son, a mechanical engineer, did all the maintenance on the car and more. Everything else works great.

I know it is worth at best $3k, if it were running properly. I will not put in $3-5k to buy and install a rebuilt tranny. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like you already answered your question. you say you're not willing to spend 3-5k on replacing the transmission, so not sure how we can help you.

Used transmission is an Option. They can be had for around 1000$. You could also just sell the car as is and let somebody have a kick *** mechanics special.

Rebuilding the trans is another option, albeit time consuming. Possibly the retaining edge has worn off of one of the clutch baskets and that may be part of the chunks. It's really not that complicated a job, depends how much you want the car. Sounds like your son wouldn't even break a sweat pulling it apart. Parts aren't too expensive

How much do you want for the car?.... If you are ready to get rid of it.

I am interested in the interior.

Where are you located?

Yes, my post was a bit thoughtless. Sorry.

I was hoping for advice on how to sell the car to someone who might want it for a parts car or to repair it. I did post on Craigslist. Got two calls but neither pursued buying the car.

The best I could get for scrapping the car was $600-$800.

I did find a used tranny for $1600 with 150k miles on it and cost to install is another $1150. So, for roughly $2750 I could get it running again.

We are somewhat conflicted as the car is very nice and was running perfectly, but with 204k miles on it, it may not make sense to put more money into it.

We just sold it for $800 to an Audi lover who has a new tranny from a totaled A8. It found a good home and should run for many more miles. We will miss the car greatly. What a great car.

Wow what a great deal! That's the price of a couple of spare parts from the dealership.
