Hi Group,

I am new to the AudiWorld. I recently purchased a 01 S8 with 99k miles, drove it for a month and found it needs a new transmission due to the high pitch whining coming from the transmissions front differential.

I found a 2000 A8 with 130k miles that would possibly be a great donor.

Would the transmission from the 2000 A8 be interchangeable with my 2001 S8?

Any help appreciated.

The D2 S8 trans has a FBG code. No other trans will work because of the final drive ratios.

I figured as much.

Dealership quoted me $7k for a new one and an Audi specialist in Troutdale quoted me $4500 for a complete rebuild.

It might only be a clogged filter, change it first and see.

I've thought about trying to swap an A8 or A8L trans and rear differential into an S8 for gear ratios that better suit my driving (plus I have a really nice FUN trans in storage) but I do not know if it'd work with the ECU and TCU, or if an A8 TCU would work... Kinda risky given the amount of work.

If you do end up changing it, might aswell look into going for a B5 S4 6 speed swap
