Default D2 S8 Manual Trans Swap

I have a 2002 S8 with a questionable automatic and I bought it with the intention to eventually do a manual conversion.

A local pick n pull near me has a 1990 Audi V8 manual that just came in. According to my research it has a 016 AWW transmission which should have a 4.11 final drive.

Other info that I found about swapping S8's concluded that people mostly use 5speed and 6speed 01E transmissions with URs4/6 front axles.

Before I go pull this transmission from the pick n pull I was hoping someone might know a bit more about the 016 trans and if it would be compatible in my application.

I would go with the 01E. There are 6 speed versions and you can get the .56 6th gear for it.

Sourcing a 01E here in Canada has been a bit tough lately. The cost difference between the 016 and the 01E is enormous hence why I got fairly excited to see this V8 at the pick n pull.

Im not dead set on it yet, just doing some research to see if its even a viable option to use a 016.

Thanks for the speedy reply Tozo, I've read through some of your other threads a while back.

Would the 016 trans have the same bolt pattern on the bell housing to match the 40v in my s8?

Any idea if the axle flanges are different and would prevent me from using the URs4/6 axles?

Transmission input shaft size similar to an 01e? I think the early v8 motors had a different crank bolt pattern so perhaps finding a suitable clutch, flywheel and pressure plate might be an issue.

I think the 016 has the gear selector on the side rather than on top also.

Still scouring the internet to try and find any info these transmissions.

Doesnt look like the 016 will work.

The 016 in Audi V8's is supposed to be a bit stronger and uses a larger input shaft than the 5cyl 016 transmissions.

The axle flanges can be swapped with 01E apparently.

The only real issue is the 016 has a longer input shaft that requires a pilot bearing in the crank shaft which I cant imagine my 40v would accommodate.

It also has a shorter bellhousing so none of the usual flywheel solutions will fit. You'd need a spacer akin to what the 2.7T uses, but twice as thick.

You could get a pilot bearing in to the 40V crank if you removed the bushing for the torque converter and made up an adapter to suit, but since the 40V manual flywheel normally contains the pilot bearing you'd probably need a custom flywheel making too.

There are a few minor differences in the bolt pattern, but I'm not sure they would prevent it bolting up. An 01E is easier though since it was factory in Germany and has been done before

So I've tracked down a 01E 6speed from a C5 A6 2.7TT at a local yard for cheap, only $400 CAD. I will be pulling it next weekend. The car looks like a theft recovery, with the engine off the transmission shifts through all the gears nicely so I will take my chances that its good.

What items should I also take from the A6? Trans, shifter assembly, clutch assembly, clutch slave and line, trans mounts. Anything else?

Now to track down the rest of the items I need.

What vehicle have people used a clutch pedal from?

Is it correct to use 2 passenger side URs6 axles?

Is there an issue with the placement of the crank position sensor in the 01e bell housing or will the 40v one work correctly?

I don't know what ratio your stock rear diff is so you might consider getting that as well. Also keep in mind you'll have to have a custom drive line made as the one from the A6 won't be the correct length. Also you have to have the ECU programmed as a manual and there will be some wiring as well. It's a well documented proccess to swap an auto for a manual on the A6 C5 2.7t but I don't know about an A8 D2.

Slight change of plans. After looking for a urs6 pedal assembly and passenger axle I came across a deal too good to pass up on a 5 speed 01E along with the pedals, shifter, clutch master, passenger axle.

This 01E should be the same 4.11 final drive as the S8 so it should be fairly simple to swap.

So far my parts list is

- 01E 5 speed
- 2x passenger front right axles from a UrS6
- UrS6 shifter assembly
- UrS6 pedal assembly (apparently the clutch pedal need minimal modification to fit)
- Extend front portion of drive shaft 4.5"
- Make a spacer about the size of a drive shaft flange to extend passenger front axle
- S8 manual ecu file (already acquired)
- UrS6 clutch master and make a new hard line to slave
- Make transmission mount brackets or modify subframe

Apparently I can use a S4 clutch and then must use a S4 bell housing spacer. Found information elsewhere that I can use a V6 3.0L clutch and no spacer. Need this confirmed.

Found ImQuattro's Google album with the exact same swap https://picasaweb.google.com/1041380...nualConversion
