Death knell for my A8?

I agree with the above input. I suspect pulley not attached correctly. I recall a detent in the pulley to make it sit flat. Remove the belt, remove the pulley, check for flatness, clean both surfaces and reassemble.

I try to tackle some modest DIY work on the car, but I'm not sure if this would qualify as modest or not. Wouldn't the whole front end have to come off? Or it sounds like I may be able to just get down in there with an allen and potentially just re-torque the outer pulley without removing anything else.
The other thought I had was that if this really does date back to the time when the timing belt was last changed, it's been at least a couple years now, and I'd think that if it's gone this long, the problem is far from urgent. Not that I've ever been one to procrastinate...

BUT, you'll need to remove both fans (not simple...viscous fan needs special tools) and the front driver's side (bank #2) timing belt cover (just spring clips), to clear space to remove the belt and crank serp pulley.
P.S. As I recommend to ALL DIYers and non-DIYers: Invest a few bucks in a Bentley manual and it'll pay for itself many times over...even if just to educate (armed) yourself, to avoid the screwing the vast majority of pro mechanics are ready to deal out. Here >>
