Default Fuel smell and leak

I need a little help. Yesterday I fillled the car up and drove a short distance home, maybe 3 miles and park the car. The day gets a little warmer and I go out to the garage and smell gas. I walk around the car a the smell gets stronger in the rear near the fuel door. A green ligh goes on in my head and I return to Audiworld looking for help and I see this a commom problem. I remove the plate covering the fuel fittings and low and belold there is a puddle of gas sitting on top of the tank. If you look at the picture I have included the fuel was in the depression by the fuel gauge sending unit.

My question is how did it get there ? The fuel sender is sealed in side the the tank. You can disconnect the top of the sender but the unit looks sealed. There is a brass bolt to the left that looked like it might be leaking, but I am not sure what that bolt is connected to. The rubber fuel lines where also looking a little damp but they felt tight.

I hate to give the Dealer a few bucks if it's something simple I could fix.

Anybody?

Default What timing!!

Hello,

I wish I could help.
Last tuesday I filled my car with gas, then parked it in the garage.
Normally, my car stays outside, but my other car is in the body shop
(long story) so the Audi was inside. I went into the garage later and
I smelled gas. To shorten this story, I also searched Audiworld for
'gas smell', found a few posts, removed the rear carpet and the
access panel, and I also found fuel there. I soaked it up with a few
rags, and no more gas smell. However, I'm sure that the next time
I fill up I will have the same thing.

Any suggestions?

Barry

Default Go to Dealer and buy repair kit for tank........

then you remove small cover that says auf and zu on it.Auf=open,zu=closed.Turn cover to open and it is gonna pop out.Remove yellow seal that is gonna be under and install new cover and seal(part of repair kit).Very easy,You will see it.

Default Sounds right - I think this is a known A8 issue.

When I was checking out my A8 pre-purchase, the check engine light was on. Hooked up VAG-COM, and the DTC was something about "fuel system integrity". I figured someone had left the gas cap loose.

When I took the car to the dealer for Audi Assured inspection, they immediately assumed it was this seal, and replaced it as part of the AA process.

Default When you do the fix, can you take a few more pictures

It sounds like an easy fix, I'll post it to audipages. This is a very common fault on the A8.

Once you get it apart, take a few pictures and take a few pictures of the repair kit too before it goes in.

Good luck!

Thanks.
