Loud noise from cooling fan 2001 A8L
I am fiscinated of the knowledge in this forum and was wondering if any of you can help me out. Three weeks ago I bought a 2001 A8L. The last two days after I drive it for a while the temp. cauge goes about 3/4 up and the cooling fan kicks in. Everything is fine except that there is a VERY loud humming noise while the fan is going. Is this normal? Should I take it to the dealer? Thanks much in advance

I believe he is talking about the electric fan not the belt fan
However, i would like to replace my belt fan with an electric one. I did this on my A6 and it ran much quieter.

IMHO, the problem is not the fan.
I suspect the thermostat is sticking and not opening fully, and the electric fan is just doing it's job protecting the motor. Your engine is running much hotter than normal. Except during the most extreme circumstances, the temperature guage should never be running over 1/2 on the guage.
BTW: My electric fan is sometimes noisy running at full speed when I come in from a track session. The temp guage is also at 3/4, but I've been running at full throttle for 30 minutes in 90+ oF weather.

Re: IMHO, the problem is not the fan.
Thank you for the input! I thought that the engine is running hotter than normal. Now the question is: Do I take it to the dealer to check the thermostat? I wonder how big of a job this is?

Same problem last fall
When I purchased my A8L last fall, the temperature guage was also running in the 3/4 range and the fan was noisy. Dealer replaced the thermostat and now the guage rarely goes above the 1/4 mark.

It's a big job for an inexpensive part.
These pics are taken from the audipages Timing Belt Replacement procedure and show the location of the thermostat on the 32V motor. You have to go thru an awful lot of work to get access to the thermostat, and it's probably best done by a dealer.

Re: Same problem last fall
I got lucky, it happened right after I purchased the car and it only had about 39,000 miles on it so they fixed it under warranty. So, sorry I have no idea what it cost.
