Default Malfunctioning ECU 1997 B2 S8

Hi all,

I've got a 1997 B2 S8 and am seeing some issues with the ECU (or so the shop tells me). Can anyone give me some tips on the following:
  • Where would I get a replacement (4D0 997 557 DX) ECU? They don't seem to be very easy to get, any tips would be appreciated.
  • Would it be possible to use the ECU from the regular A8? (4D0 907 557 DX) Perhaps with a modification of the software?
  • Are there companies that specialize in revision of these ECU's? If so, any recommendations?
  • What other potential issues am I looking at? Would I need to relearn the keys, etc.?

This stuff is all pretty new to me, so hope I am phrasing it all correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well first, it's a "D2" ... "B2" would be an '80-'88 Audi Coupe.

Your model was never sold in North America...D2 A8's were '97-'03 here and the D2 S8's (w/40v engine) were only '01-'03 ... never a manual trans offered here for any year A8 or S8.

At the very least, since your ECU is for a manual trans, I think you need an ECU from a manual A8...the A8 part number you show doesn't show up anywhere in ETKA(?).

AS for reprogramming another ECU to work with your engine/trans? ...hopefully someone who knows more here will chime in.

What country are you in?

Cheers

Assuming you are in Europe, your car will have an active immobiliser. In 1997, this may be a separate module under the dash, or it may be incorporated into the dash module. Either way, your key programming should be protected, though the dash/immobiliser may need coding to the new/replacement ECU (which will be possible via VCDS.

Yeah I notice the spelling mistake now, had an A4 before so the B is still a little stuck in my head

I read that my model wasn't sold in North America (it has the 32v engine with manual 6 speed transmission), but figured with all the automatic to manual conversion projects that I read about that someone might know something.

Do you know what ECU version you currently have? I'm assuming it's an ME7 but I dont know too much about PFL D2 cars

if your ECU is still working enough to dump the data from it, you can DIY this by dumping both the main EEPROM (via bootmode probably) and the 95040 (immo) EEPROM, and re-flashing them to another audi ECU with the same part number as yours

If you can find a used ECU, you can pair it to your car with Ross Tech's Vag Com or whatever similar tool you have available in the Netherlands.

Using Ross tech and a diagnostic cable, you could also pull all of the codes, record them, clear them and then see what new codes - if any - show up. If the old ECU is really dead, you might not be able to pair up a new one on your own. However it is a trivial matter - 30 minutes tops - for a Dealer to plug in and do it to a good used ecu.

I managed to find (and buy, at a relatively reasonable price) a used ECU at a local junkyard yesterday. A stroke of luck, as there do not seem to be many manual PFL S8's around (I spent quite some time looking for my car, and have not seen another manual S8 offered since). I will report back once the ECU has been installed, maybe my experiences are of interest to others with the same problem.

On a side note, and maybe also of interest, I understood that the hardware for all PFL D2 ECU's is the same. The only thing different is the software on the chip. This chip can be desoldered and replaced with another chip which has the correct software flashed to it. Probably not a trivial matter, but also not impossible with a little research.
