Default My 02 s8 started running very poorly

The serpentine belt came loose and the battery died so I replaced the tensioner and put the belt back but my s8 is not running well and it cuts out

Maybe the pulley ruined alternator so it cannot charge the battery?
Measuring the voltage at the alternator should show if it doing his job,i think it should be 13.5V but i am not sure.

The battery light came on when the belt came off and went out when I replaced it so I don't think that's it

So you installed a brand new battery?
Could be that you need to do battery coding through vcds.
Are the dash lights or headlights a bit dim?
I think you should post a video of your problem.

Step 1. cut a hole in the box.

Scratch that wrong situation.

Step 1. VCDS codes.

Maybe when the battery voltage was low one of the ignition coils died or something similar. It could also need a throttle body adaptation or something like that. If you take a video of how it's running/cutting out that might shed light on it, otherwise it's guesswork. If you run the battery low all kinds of stuff might need adaptations as things get really goofy.

It's important to service the serpentine belt tensioner and to a lesser extent the idler. The bearings can be repacked if the pulley is not too worn. If the tensioner pulley is worn it can be replaced with one for a Hyundai 2.7L engine, one is not listed separately for the Audi, just the whole tensioner assembly. I run the Hyundai part on both my cars:

DAYCO Part # 89010 or GATES Part # 38027 should replace the pulley for around $15. The size appears to be 82mm x 17mm x 25mm (or 26mm) Application (among others) 2001 HYUNDAI SANTA FE 2.7L V6 : Belt Drive : Idler Pulley

If this component is ignored the bearings run dry and then it falls apart and takes out the serpentine belt, leaving you stranded. The idler lasts a lot longer than the tensioner roller. The stock bearing cover may not fit the new roller, I RTV'd on a circle of plastic coated paper from an advertising mailer. This could probably be skipped but it's not too hard to do.

IMO these rollers should be repacked at 70-100K and the tensioner replaced due to pulley wear around 150K. My tensioner roller was worn pretty badly at this point. The idler might last forever if repacked regularly or maybe replace it at 150K or so and figure it'll outlast the chassis. Since you get stranded if one of these fail and they are pretty cheap it's not worth trying to run them for 200K miles.
