Maybe it has the wrong fuel pump installed, if so it'll die when the tank gets a bit low.

If you're having issues with fuel delivery under half a tank, has the fuel pump been replaced? Was the o-ring that seals the fuel pick-up path of the fuel-pump assembly in the tank, there's your problem. Every time I've had to pull the pump, that damned o-ring has to be replaced. I tried to reuse it once and the thing would start sucking air after the fuel level got down below it.

running "out of gas" at half a tank is an indication of a failing fuel pump.
Happened on my A8 a long time ago. It will continue to work for a few hundred miles if you keep it over 1/2 tank then it won't and the car won't run anymore.
Ask me how I know...

The service history is pretty spotty. I did the timing belt and everything associated with it and it has fresh brakes, oil, and tires.

I got a fuel pump from Poland but have not installed it yet. It does appear to have the correct port for the D2. Seller seems to have a good rep. Under $40 shipped:

Fuel pump BENZINPUMPE KRAFTSTOFFPUMPE AUDI A8 S8 D2 2.8-4.2L 1994-02 4D0906091C | eBay

Some of the pumps listed under 4D0906091C from China do not have the correct extra port for the D2 and will for sure not work.

I reused the gaskets when I did the pump on my 2001. Only issue there is that like many others I did get some tiny cracks in the pump cover that caused evap leak (small) codes, P0442, so IMO it's worth buttering the cover with JB weld around the hole for the long bolt to deal with this issue.
