Default New guy with questions

Hi! I've been a surfer here for a while but joined to get smarter now that my 2001 S8 is developing issues. I moved east and took it in for routine maintenance at the local Audi dealer and they said my transmission seal was leaking and they're quoting $2k to replace. I made it 1700 miles with no issues when I moved and the dealer in the old state did a thorough inspection to make sure I wouldn't have problems on the move. After the new dealer finished with it, I can smell burned transmission fluid every time I drive it.

I'm familiar with working on older American cars but is this something I can do and should I be looking for a new mechanic?

If it's the most common failure on these (near 100% of em) , it's probably the output shaft flange seal on the rear end of the trans, which is actually the middle (torsen) differential.

If so, it's actually gear oil (synthetic 75/90), not ATF, dripping on the left side catalytic converter.

The part (very prone to failure) is about $20...I've replaced at least 3 of these on my car myself...not fun, but doable by a home mechanic.

If this is your problem (not a disabling one by any stretch), here's the procedure >>
