What exactly does the coupler on that hose do?
I've looked over mine a couple of times and wondered why it's not just one continuous hose...
Is it something to do with flexibility when fitting the banjo bolt?

I wondered that too. My thought is the coupler is there to artificially create pressure within the steering system.

- OR -

Just another ingenious way by Audi to create an unnecessary weak point that could fail and need to be fixed : )

I've heard if you take it out the power steering becomes really loud. At least it does on the older type 44 chassis cars.

Ive had not issues or increased sound with mine removed.
