Default Problems with the 2000 A8

Couple of problems with the old girl: Starting first thing in the morning can take anywhere from 3 to 15 key turns. The engine always starts, but the rev needle then bounces up and down a couple of times between 2000 and 300 rpm, then the motor dies and the battery/alternator warning light comes on. Occassionally the EPC light too. Repeat the process and it will eventually stay running and it will be fine afterwards, starting first time for the rest of the day. The battery tests fine and it's been doing this for about a year, not getting noticeably better or worse..wondering if it's maybe the fuel injectors ?

The other issue started last week, the "brake" light would intermittently flash. This week it stays on, flashing and the ABS light just came on...There's no evident change in brake feel or efficacy , but it's concerning.
I've read threads where it can be traced to a broken wiring connection and fixed simply and others where the module has been replaced at around $1500. I'm not adverse to pulling out interior panels and poking around, ( heck, I changed my own tranny fluid once back in the day), but I no longer have access to Vag Com or Shadetree so can't pull codes. Before I take it in to the shop wondered if anyone had any ideas?
