Reprogramming Key Fob
Well, the battery went dead in the wife's fob months ago. I finally figured out that they things aren't really sealed (I thought the housing were sonic welded together) and got new batteries for it. The reprogramming sequence in the Owners Manual does not work. There are about a 1000 different "ways" to do it on Youtube. I don't a frikkin VAGCOM unit to do it per the Bentley manual. Does ANYone know how to do this. None of the other methods (some were poorly written anyway) found on the net works.
Thanks,
Dave

What sort of car do you have? It's easy on my 2003 S8, just press unlock on the non-working fob and then open the door with the key manually. I believe it'll work to lock the door also if unlocked. However this is for the Facelift D2.
Do not confuse this procedure with the one for dealing with the RF chip based immobilizer in the keyfob. That does require VCDS and the Immo PIN. And a very specific immo chip in the fob, most Audi generics do not work in the D2.

It's a 2003 (made 2002) D2 A8L. Apparently the line between the D2 and D3 gets blurred in 2003 and I have to specify that my car is a D2 when getting parts and stuff. Most of the time I just look for 2002 parts and have no issues. But anyway, this damned key fob programming is driving me nuts. Everybody seems to have their own method and none of them work for this one. I'll try your suggestions when I get home. The battery in the offending fob had been dead for several months. I wonder if that might make a difference?

Maybe your new batteries are bad or in the wrong way, or there is a transmitter problem.
If you have an old analog FM radio, tune it to an empty section of the band and try the remote with it held very near the radio. You should hear a faint tone. I just tried this with an old bedroom clock/radio and could hear it faintly with the radio dial set around 90 Mhz but while some frequencies might be stronger you should get some sound anywhere on the dial. A strong radio station would drown it out.
If you do not have a radio such as this I can suggest alternatives. However the car radio might work, I have not tried it.
