Wouldn't it be terrible if the stock coding is what causes premature failures?! I wonder how many of the high mileage D2 transmissions were recoded vs. left on stock settings.
Hey S8ilver,

Following up on your re-code of your transmission.
  • How's it going?
  • Still notice the improvements: no more slow speed clunking?
  • Is the transmission still shifting smooth?
  • Would you do it again?

All is well. Clunking is gone. I haven't noticed any ill effects and it's still shifting the smoothest it ever has. Full control of 1st gear is great, not only when driving briskly but when in traffic. I don't have to guess anymore if I can time a downshift to change lanes or pass in traffic. Sometimes I forget that I'm not in sport mode; it's just so much more responsive.

I'd definitely do it again.

That's great news!

I didn't get a chance to do re-code mine during the timing belt service but I'm definitely going to do it after hearing your response.

Thanks!

01132 won't take on A8...it seems to be S8 specific. I think your 01032 should have similar effects.

I've had mine coded to 00032 for years ('01 A8)...sport coding...plus full use of first gear up to 40mph in an A8 unleashes a hidden monster in lower speed curves or the sudden need for a serious burst of power.

If you don't have a PC, borrow a laptop from a friend, download free VCDS-Lite and get a $15 OBD-usb cable....it's just soft-coding of the TCM...doesn't hurt anything or hurt the car's drive-ability...you'll hardly notice it until you purposely use it.

Have you tried 00132?

After many trial and errors my 03 S8 "Tip" buttons now works like this:
"Tip" buttons always live. Works both in "D" and "S". No need to throw the shifter over to the right anymore. I just hit the "Tip" button, it either upshifts or downshifts, and stays in tip mod for about 10-12 seconds if I don't hit another shift.

Tools needed: Vag-com
Parts needed: zero
Cost: zero

This works on the 02 S8 too.
Perhaps also on the 02-03 A8 with "Tip" steering wheel.
Always write down the original codes before you change them, just in case.

1. Plug in vag-com
2. Verify steering wheel module, is coded 01015
3. Recode transmission module to, to 00132

That's it! Enjoy your "Tip on demand".

Before it broke, my transmission had the stocking coding 00001 but always held to redline in 1st and 2nd (cannot try 3rd prudently). This is also regardless of throttle position.

Well then, apparently it was already "broken" or you may be mistaken. 00001 is stock Euro coding, which does not include 1st holding to redline (unless WOT) or the ability to downshift to 1st (unless dead slow and sudden WOT).
All tip tran's hold all other gears (2nd on up) to redline in tip mode regardless of throttle position, no matter what soft coding.

The coding is 00001 according to VCDS. For some reason it was holding to redline at any throttle position and I could downshift to 1st. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that (i) the TCM was faulty or (ii) the throttle position sensor (or cable?) was faulty. I knew also that the transmission would downshift in D when throttle was kicked down. In fact, once an ******* drove tail-gated me, and I let him pass; then I got the kind of rage like the boss from Lost Highway, so I chased him. I'm sure it downshifted to 1st (saw redline at maybe 70-80).

Maybe this is because my car is an early model (transmission code DSL). Also, even right before my transmission crapped out, it wasn't really creeping to the tallest gear unless unless the throttle is lifted off.
