steering stereo controls not working.

hi, new to A8 ownership.
2001 4.2Q
yesterday the steering control stereo control switches worked.
today they are not responding. although they do light up when the lights are switched on ( if that info is of any use.)
any guidance to solving this problem?

Is the car running?

They only work with ignition on because of CAN.

on the way to work this morning ..all is fine..
could it be contact points in the steering wheel?
if so should i dismantle wheel or spray some electric contact fluid?
