Default Transmission dead?

Good forum you have here, very active and all, it is great to see.

I am situated in Italy and have been enjoying a 2001 a8 for three years now, sporting a 3.3 twin turbo diesel and a 5 speed transmission. I find it a very good looking car, with a classic design, plus it is supremely comfortable, (with double windows it is as noiseless as any I have driven, + recaro seats and all the rest)
So with such a great car it is a pity they did not put a longer lasting transmission.

I have 1 faultcode :

17114 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio

P0730 - 35-00 -

First of, the car has made a total of 180 k miles, 50 by me. I had the ATF and filter changed November 2014 by a recommended specialist who said it was looking clean.
Since then it ran even smoother, but lately developed a short surge in rpm's during gearchange
Last week some clunks came while slowing down in a crossroad and I drove home 3km in fifth I recon.
When I start it up now and put it in drive, nothing happens. If I then give it 2000rpm, a clunck sounds, and all gears light up red in the dashboard. I can then move around in 5th gear, which I don't. Unless I take it to a garage or to the dump, I am not moving it anywhere.

Have anyone here experienced the same? (hopefully not)

When I did a search on the faultcode I found this guy in the UK who picked his transmission apart and found a o-ring broken and a worn down bearing plate. It is an interesting read for those who want to see the insides of these boxes:
Another D2 S8 with Auto Transmission problems - A8 Parts Forum

On the highway I could drive without problem, and I could take it to Germany where there is a guy who offers to put inside a revisioned one.

Is this or the dump the only alternatives. Could it be a silly fault like a gearbox sensor or some kind of electric fault like that?

Thanks for tips and answers and happy driving all. (lucky bastards you )

I have been reading a lot both here and in german forums, and seen rebuilds in youtube to get a better understanding about the box.
I have also read up in bimmerforums as many there also have the 5HP24 box.
There is a lot of great info and I really appreciate that people take their time to post.

Here is my thought: Could it simply be a low atf level?
That never occured to me as I had it changed along with the filter November 2014, and it had not been leaking before that.

In retrospect i have been having a harddown shift from 2. to 1. coming to a stop, as well as slight revs sometimes during shifting, and more acutely, I have noticed a faint burnt smell stepping out of the car the last few times before the incident occured.

Does that mean the interior is toast, or could I be lucky and be back on the road with more more fluid?

Tomorrow I will check the level, and if that is low prepare to drop the pan and look for debris.

The burning smell is usually the output shaft seal at the rear of the transmission, gear lube, not transmission fluid. As far as shifting? Could be low fluid. That was the messiest job I have done. I checked twice about a week apart, still not sure it was perfect, but it was running over.

Ok, I have found some very dirty oil.
Level seems to be about right. Perhaps a bit to full, it overflows to early, around 15-25 degrees centigrade, or 60-80 F. (Not sure if sure I can use vcds light to measure transmissionoil temp, so I compared to my bodytemperature)

Not sure if it smells burnt, the torque converter is slipping, maybe this has caused the dark color, I drove it a total of 50 Km in slipping Limp mode to show it to another transmission shop.

This was supposed to have been changed 16 months ago (13T miles since) by a auto-transmision specialist, who did actually show me a filter that he said was the old one, but now I am not certain if he ever did anything. Also he said it was pretty clean, which makes no sense. Mine now looks like the dirty one on the picture at the end of this DIY S8 ATF article:

I will take of the pan and have a look, if I am lucky it is the pressure regulator valves which are clogged up, like in this case:

Will proceed when I receive the oil filter and gasket.

I would NOT take post #1 there very seriously (makes little sense)....rather, look at post #3 there...No one here knows more about trans than Tozo.
