another reason for not going staggered on a D2 is Quattro...
All 4 wheels need to be within 3% of the same diameter to prevent the system fighting itself.
Staggered can be done, but for a 245/45x18 the next compatible size is 275/40x18.
18" or 19" is a personal choice, you still run a 40 profile on a 19" rim (245/40, or 255/40 if you wish), which is a 'comfortable' profile. 35's and lower start getting stiff...
