Default Will have all the parts to do the MFSW retrofit soon!

It will give me something to do during the holidays to keep me sane.....I have the following piece parts:

Steering Wheel

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/steering1.jpg">

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/steering2.jpg">

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/steering3.jpg">

I bought a MFSW control module from nationwide recyclers and the dual relay plate (from the dealer) which goes in the middle of the aux relay panel just to the left of the steering column:

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/sm_DSC_5270.JPG">

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/sm_IMG_1703.JPG">

I realized that I also needed a new cancelling ring (clock spring) and just got the one of the 02 at nationwide......

And Ted Basile is making the last wiring harness I need, which is a tiny harness on the wheel, labeled black 3-pin connector to black T5H plug on self cancelling ring....(photo stolen from A6 forum)

<img src="http://www.audipages.com/upgrades/multiwheel.jpg">

This way everything should be pretty close to plug and play....take off my steering wheel, air bag and self cancelling ring, figure out what I need to do to get the few extra wires on the back of the self cancelling ring, hook it all up and be done!

Will have a heated steering wheel also!!!

Default Nice! So, can you recode the steering wheel control module to have active tip buttons?

...that is, they activate when pressed, or will they only function when in tip mode?

My A6 has the exact same steering wheel. For the 2002 4.2, all I needed was to change the module's code to 00032 and the tip buttons are activated by just using them, whether or not the car is in Drive or Sport. Not sure if that would work in the S8.

Very handy to have those at the fingertips, and I like the 4-spoke with the radio/telephone controls more than the 3-spoke RS6 paddleshift wheel I had previously.

Enjoy!

Default Manly men are manly enough to reach for controls on the dash. With frostbitten fingers.

What ever happened to all the guys on this forum who used to eat their leftover brake pads for the fiber?! You S8ers are getting soft. I drove up to Steamboat this weekend and all I got was a little blue. Left the windows down the whole way, just to be extra manly.

I will see, what module did you recode to get the tip to work on demand?

Default Actually, it was the tiptronic tranny itself...

00032 was the code, which is the same code used by many A6ers to give the car a "hybrid" sport mode, held 1st until redline, can downshift into 1st in tip mode etc.

When I experimented on the 2002 4.2, using this code activated the buttons on the steering wheel. Now I never throw the shifter into tip mode, I just tap one of the buttons!!!

Paul,

I posted on your other RNS-E install thread regarding the RNS-E in my 2001 A8L already equiped with the heated MFSW. The tip functions work perfectly as they always did but the volume and station up/down buttons no longer work. I notice the double relay you have (shown in the picture) is the same as mine and also I recall that someone in the past stated that this relay may need to be updated to a newer version with software version 02 to work the controls OR some other re-wiring may be needed. You're the man to figure it all out but just thought I share what brick wall I came up against and the Navi Forums had no idea how to help since very few have tried what we both know is a fairly easy upgrade to RNS-E. BTW - I still have the Factory Nav also active and can program both RNS-E and OEM factory Nav to the same destination so I can see the MFI display from the OEM side. This is cheating and is a pain to have to program both anyway...if I only program the OEM Nav I don't get any audible commands but I get all other visuals in the MFI. I was thinking to get the RNS-E to work in the MFI to perhaps use the wiring from the trunk mounted OEM Nav but never tried to do anything from lack of time.

Default You took out a Symphony I radio, correct?

The symphony I radio talks to the dash via the clock, enable and data wires from the wiring harness to dash, and so does the MFSW.

If you had an 02 or 03 A8L, it would work.....the problem is that the RNS-E is a CAN bus device, and you do not have your steering wheel hooked up to the infotainment CAN bus.

You would need the MFSW control module pictured below (notice is says CAN + Tiptronic) and any wiring changes necessary to get it on the CAN bus, which is just two wires that need to be changed. Then it would work again.
