Default 07 Audi D3 A8l 4.2L BVJ Hard Starting in cold weather

I have a issue with this car starting in colder temps 20 degrees and less. Engine will crank and start usually run 2 to 4 seconds then stalls. second attempt to start engine it will usually crank over but no start. The third or forth time it might start again do the same thing again run for 2 to 3 seconds or one or two cylinder might fire only. then stalls again and it will keep doing this.

It does depends on the temp if how quickly it will stay running. 30 degrees and above usually stays running after two or three attempts. or if the temps are closer to 15 degrees or below I wasn't able to get the engine to stay running at all. It would drain the battery if I was to keep on trying to start it before it would start.

I did change the temp sensor. It had a grey color sensor in it. and changed it with another grey color one. there wasn't any change in the way the engine started.

I also disconnected the Mas air sensor which the engine didn't fire at all.

I do have a Ross tech if that would help if something needs to be checked

I have one engine related fault which is left motor mount electrically open

I all so have a thread of this on Audi forums too. Figured I would give this forum a try too.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Engine mounts won't affect the engine stalling. Does the engine stall out even if you apply pressure on the gas pedal? I would check, via VCDS, fuel trims and fuel pressure. Also try checking throttle body position and re-learn the idle position if needed. If your engine is running too lean, you have a vacuum leak/unmetered air somewhere. Make sure your air intake duct is securely attached to the throttle body and your MAF sensor is reading appropriate volumes of air.

yes the engine will still stall out even applying pressure to throttle. several times trying to keep it running.

The colder the temps are the harder it is to keep the engine running once it starts. I mean the temps were in the single digits I had trouble just getting the engine to start once I was able to, I had just as a hard time keeping the engine running. each time it would start it would run a little longer etc until it would stay running.

I must add once the engine stays running and after its warm up cycle is done. the engine runs good it idles good etc.

I am no expert with this VCDS but I did check engine modules basic check stuff what I could before my laptop battery died all checked out okay.

I will check some more info when battery is charged again.

all I can say is the issue I am having sounds like a more air than fuel issue when air temps are cooler for sure. doesn't make sense once the engine is warmed up it runs fine.

Maybe I could take a video of trying to start the car would it help?

Nope. The critical one for things like this is the engine computer--#01.

Well I thought it had to do with the bad motor mount? You are saying I have issue with the engine ECU?

If you need something special let me know and will need instructions on how to get what is needed.

Engine crank, stall and cold running issues should have nothing to do with a motor mount. Only conincidential if codes for that. More likely something like fuel pump issues, vacuum leak, a sensor, worn plugs and others. Any codes in engine computer will help narrow. It's not usually th computer that is the issue; the diagnostic Fault Codes codes are in it and read with VCDS. Ross-Tech: VCDS Tour
