Sorry to hijack these thread but i have a question regarding oil change 2009 A8L 4.2 TDI (127 000km on the odometer and live in Norway)

Im planning on removing my DPF and remap it. The guys who are doing the tune said they didnt want to do it before the transmission oil and filter is replaced.

Since ive pasted 120 000km i think its a good anyways to replace filter and oil.

Due to the age of the car (2009), is it safe to say that it is the ZF LifeGuard 6 is the correct oil?

Havent found any evidence (bills or service manual) that indicates that it has gone through a oil change earlier.

Regards
Kenneth

Default Lots of info below but LF6 is good

ATF change isn't listed as an Audi service item, but is by ZF the transmission manufacturer.

In short, this topic has been done to death and an ATF and filter change at 80k miles is a good idea to maintain optimum transmission performance and longevity.

LF6 or an equivalent will work just as well.

See here for info on ATF as it applies to the D3:https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...truth-2882676/
Here for firsthand experience of using an alternative to LF6:

And here for the official info from ZF: http://www.zf.com/global/media/en_us...s/TE-ML_11.pdf

Default I have not killed mine yet

I do my own maintenance mostly. And go way overkill. Oil at 5K, air and cabin filter at 10K, flushed everything best I can.
My next tranny service will be open fill port and let 3 1/2 - 4 liters drain out. Then start car and shift forward to reverse and fill back up with LG 6. The filter and fluid was changed at 70k and 10 years. Thinking maybe 110k is when It will be good to drain and fill. This should cover it to 150k.
By then I may be tired of pulling air box for oil changes. Move on.

When in doubt, flush it out. Change that fluid man.

On your question, it will normally be LifeGuard 6 or the Audi equivalent in it, a.k.a. The "gold" fluid as described by its (only when new) color. The confusion can be if it ever was serviced for the "hoot" issue by a dealer (or otherwise), in which case it could have the LG 6+ fluid, a.k.a. "blue" fluid. 6+ was discontinued by ZF but still can be had at Audi dealers. BUT it remains a pretty safe/informed guess that ZF 6 is what you would be replacing--since you found no evidence of prior service and the "hoot" issue is covered apparently only in a North America dealer TSB (technical service bulletin) that seems little known outside of N.A. from a prior post where someone in Europe was trying to figure out fluid choice issues and said his servicing dealer basically had no idea what it was about.

I assume you mean open the drain port... BTW, if you first run it and heat it up, the fluid will have expanded some, thus allowing you to drain more when you turn the motor off and open the drain plug. I got up to about 4 ½L out on some drains not involving a pan pull. If you want to get fancy and tilt the front of the car down somehow and then level it later to get the fill right, you can get yet more out--the better part of a liter is stuck down in the pan where it recesses lower for the filter, even though the drain is up at a somewhat higher part of the pan bottom.

Is there a DIY on this anywhere? I've never done the transmission fluid, but my car just hit 100K and I would like to change the trans fluid and filter myself. Just would like a clear guide before I tackle it. Thanks!

I'm sure there is. You can either search until you find it or you can contact ZF themselves and they can provide you with the correct procedure.

i'm at 155k with original fluid...tranny does shift hard between 1-2.

We did own an 2000 2.8 A6 with 220k miles or more and never changed fluid and it shifted very smooth

Completely different transmission between your A6 and A8.
