I changed the brake switch (assuming everything was reassembled correctly) ... it still does not start. Next I will try disconnecting the battery to see if that will reset something.

I disconnected the battery for a couple of minutes, reconnected, and still it does not start. I also tried to move the gear selector out of park, and it still would not move into another gear.

Sounds like you are going to need a VCDS scan to identify what the problem is.

Brake switch is an easy test - ignition on, step on brake, watch lights :P

Yeah VCDS for sure, there might be an authorization issue at play here, who knows.

Hello Astrorat,
Take a look at this, Doc had similar problem and I found it to be the terminal 15 relay.

I looked over the whole starter motor engagement process last nite.

J329 #15 supply relay is a big one but there are other components in the mix of course all controlled by J518 the Entry and Start Authorization module.

With VCDS this should be spitting the reason/code.

I pulled the J329 relay to replace, but no auto parts stores in the area carry a replacement. I will check with the VW dealer as we have no Audi dealer in East Texas.

One additional note ... the brake lights do light illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed.

A trick I use with relays is to put your finger on the relay box, then cold start, have someone use the key etc. to attempt to start. At some point you should feel that relay energize or click-in. Now this won't tell you the contacts are good but at least you know the coil is pulling in.

Check your fuses too. For 2004 left panel (end of dash) I get #15 5A and #42 25A

I checked the fuses and there is no fuse in space #15 and #42 was 25A and it was fine.

I went to our local VW dealer and picked up a J329 relay replacement (p/n 4HO 951 253)* and installed it. Turned the ignition key and nothing. It's still not starting.

So far I have replaced the brake switch and J329 relay and still it won't start. Dang!

*the 4HO 951 253 was an updated part number for #8DO 951 253 according to the VW parts guy
