4.2 liter 8 cylinder gushing oil out of drivers side of engine.
2005 A8L. If the engine is on oil flows out of the engine at a rate similar to holding a water bottle upside down. I put a camera down the back of the engine near the drivers side vacuum check valve and found a hole about the size of my thumb. Is there something missing here? Did a hose fall out or something?
Any help is greatly appreciated Thank you in advance.

I think it's safe to say something is missing. I could guess, but given that I'm not quite intimately familiar enough with any of the 3 possible 4.2 V-8's the D3 A8 could have to give what I would call a good guess. But if I must, I'm going to say the hose to your PCV valve. Totally a guess.

Can you try to take another picture from not so close up, so we can see the overall area somewhat .
That almost looks like the black rubber plug that would be at the outer most cam, but with a bolt through it and a fitting of some kind, I am lost right now....

Looks like the area where there is either a plug on one end and the cam position/Hall sensor on the other.
For OP, the heads on the two sides are inverted/mirror images of each other in most respects. What you see on the back of the drivers side head is similar to what you will find on the front of the passenger side head. I think that makes it the Hall/cam sensor area, and the opposite end of that cam is plugged on the opposite side (US passenger rear and US drivers front). If that is what it is, it is a separate replaceable part. I'm surprised it runs without it but it is probably in a default mode and check engine light is on?

Without a better picture or your looking at a parts diagram or something, i can't pin it down. I don't know so far if it is a sheared or failed hard part, or a missing seal. None of these scenarios is common on a 4.2--absent some repair work gone wrong perhaps.
Below are three pictures from my 2000 A6 4.2. Not exactly a D3 4.2, in the zone and both have same general timing belt drive and motor configuration. First is general motor. Second is driver's side head with valve cover pulled. Third is passenger side head. What is on the back of the drivers side head in part is what is on front of passenger side head (except timing belt drive is on both). Look at your passenger side head in front and see if you can identify the same thing as what seems to be missing on the drivers head, trying to take a better picture of the front of the passenger side head where sight lines are a lot better.
