A8 D3 valve cover removal: Help
I wen to change the valve covers on my 2004 A8L this past weekend and I could not get a wrench to the rearmost, lower torx bolts that hold the covers on. There did not appear to be access from below and I could not get my fingers or a wrench to these bolts from the top. Any suggestions here are much appreciated.

In order to remove the rear torx bolts, you have to remove the fenderliner and the aluminum shield also in order to have more room. After that you can use a long extension through the fenderwell to remove them. Be careful not to strip them. It took me about 6-8 hrs to do mine and that's including driving about an hr and a half round trip to get the parts. While you're at that you might want to consider replacing your cam chain tensioner gasket also which is what the half moon gasket is for.

This one and lots of patience might do the trick.

Thanks for your replies. I think that the best way to assure not stripping out the torx screws and the proper torque on reassembly is to remove the fender and engine room liners. Anyone who said that this was a two hour job is a better mechanic than I am.

LOL. We all wish it's a 2 hr job. The book calls for 4.5 hrs normally but if you have never done it on this particular model expect to put in 7-8 hrs. Hope everything works out for you.

If really sure all bolts are out...
Welcome.
If you are really sure all bolts are out--and coils and other connections off of course--then rap on it gently with a rubber mallet on accessible edges. Gasket sometimes sticks both parts kind of like its varnished.
