I can't really comment other than 10 cylinders is a lot of engine. In X years, maybe sooner than later, the world will wonder why such a thing as the S8 was ever produced. So depends how long you are going to run the car, the more years the more ridiculous it will seem.

Huge push to electrics out here in Vancouver. Teslas are all over the place.

ridiculous is great! I daily drive a crew cab long box flat bed 4x4 diesel on 37" tires that looks like it rolled out of a scrapyard.

I am very much interested in the 11-12 A8s right now after someone mentioned them. I guess they fell hard in price once the 3.0 and 4.0 turbos debuted in 2013(?). They really seem to look the nicest in black, and I like all the color combinations available along with the diamond stitching. For extremely long trips, Mish is probably right-we would like something that is more plush than an s8 with softer suspension settings. Although..20s negate the comfort...they sure add in the aesthetics department.
Teslas are nice but..80k?..I can't swing that..although could charge it at work for free..

this though...wow it looks amazing. I was looking through the brochure as well at the available switching and leather options, the browns are very very nice.

I just want to know more about this iteration of the 4.2 engine and the current transmission. More reading to do.

Nice seats are great, but useless if the transmission gives out shortly!

I have a feeling that there will be a lot of "bargains" on used Teslas around the time they start needing replacement batteries.

On the early A8's you are correct. They can be had for a pretty good deal. Based on what I've seen on here they are relatively problem free. I'm personally holding out for the 2013 4.0t's to come down a little more. 1-2 more years (probably after the D5 debuts) they should be at a low 30's price point. For me that's the best car for the money. Luxury, looks, horsepower, and decent MPG.

I do really like LS460s..We have a 00 LS400 Platinum. Very reliable car.
beige interior though...*shudder*
hard to find these black on black, or white on black.

s8 PS pump is approx 250-300$, same as for an LS400. So that's not bad.
The S8 PS pump job is an engine out job 28 hours of labor and and $800 parts, $5,500 total.

2008 Audi S8 Power steering pump 4.0ltr. 4.2ltr. 5.2ltr. 4.2ltr. 5.2ltr. 5.2ltr.

Labor is costly, but thats not my concern. I have a full service shop at home with tire machine and vehicle hoist. Not that i want to be doing this on a car im supposedly buying for trouble free long distance commuting..sucks the engine has to come out though, probably could just drop the subframe, would be much quicker i think. Slide the hydraulic table under the hoist, drop the subframe along with trans, then pop it out.

Either way though, i would like to thank this forum for turning me onto the d4 though. Much more research to be done about them..but I think i am hooked! Wife really likes them too.

I had a D4 for two years, and it was spectacular. It matches the D3 S8 in terms of performance, thanks mostly to an excellent transmission, and got an indicated 30mpg on freeway trips regularly. The interior was excellent, and well featured with or without options. Repair costs for me were minimal at 72,000 as sold. That said, you could find a comparable D3 for less than half the cost, with the only real sacrifice being a bit of efficiency and performance. So, no losers in your options. It's just a matter of balancing your priorities.

I went a different rout, a D3 A8L W12. I think it's the best of both worlds. Plenty of power with the luxury of the A8. I also changed the nose and mirror covers of a S8 for that slightly more aggressive look. So my 05 W12 and now my 09 W12 both had S8 front nose. Obviously I agree on the more aggressive look of the S8 front looks better.

Also, the W12 has the same grill as a S8 except it's black instead of gray. Also the B&O with an additional sub is absolutely amazing.
