Default ABS control module defective?

me again!

problem of the week: ABS module defective?
car: 2005 audi A8

so while my car was in last week getting the timing belt done and fuel pump, now a mysterious
ABS code that won't go away. i unplugged the battery at one point and connected the two terminals
together for a cap discharge. when i hooked it back up, this problem seemed to show up at the same
time.

tried clearing it countless number of times, came back right away. also my steering angle sensor was
popping up a code, but i went through the re-coding/basic settings of it and the error went away. i tried
also recoding the ABS module from the instructions on the ross-tech site, but that didn't seem to do anything.

00003 - Ross-Tech Wiki

they also said try turning off and on the ignition and clearing the codes three times, but that didn't seem to
work. what are the chances that the ABS module died as well?! PANIC ATTACKS.

so now, ESP, ABS, parking brake, headlight range control are all not working. ABS light and ESP light on the
dash are lit at all times.

here's a log of my whole autoscan...

Default Let's back up a step please. Questions:

I have answered lots of questions here along the way. But, this is kind of a parade of one thing after another. Reading this, I have some ideas, but I also see some kind of "no no's" in what you did. Thus, please answer some questions:

1. what is the basic general history of this car? Where did you get it? It it a normal used car, a salvage, or what?

2. Do you have any maintenance/historical records?

3. Do you own a service manual? If not, what's the plan?

yeah, well, looks like i'm not having a good month with this car. since this whole heating fiasco, it's been one sh*t storm
after another.

1. this was a normal used car. i bought it in july of 14, and have basically driven it up to this point without any issue a vagcom couldn't fix.

2. no, i do not have any maintenance/history on the service. i tried going to to dealer to see if i could get a copy
of the history of it and they said they could only give it to the original owner of the car? i wasn't entirely satisfied with
that response, but i haven't pursued it further.

3. i do not have a service manual for this car. i came off a 7 year ownership of a D2 and didn't really have many problems
with that car, but now seeing with this one - looks like i'm going to be in the market for a service manual.

Default So ideas and steps/to do's....

Punch line being that yes you may have lost/blown the ABS. And yes, you need a manual for this car. Especially if you may be on the way to a grand for an ABS module, or whatever they cost. But, some ideas first:

1. Notice all your codes around it have 2004 dates, not 2014 dates like various others I see. Are you clearing codes at the individual module level, or just trying the global clear from the VCDS screen? My (and some others') experience is often you have to do them inside of a module to get it to clear fully.

2. I personally never heard of touching two battery terminals together on an Audi, but oh well. In theory you would think it shouldn't matter w/ no power but then I also can't think of where there is a capacitor of any consequence in the system either. I can say it isn't in the manuals anywhere, and we know from another thread going on there is a battery in the alarm horn at least, so system may not like that approach. Nothing to be done now though.

3. Did you run the self test for ABS in VCDS? If not, do NOT in any early diagnostic phase. It can blow it up from my experience. But if you did, also fess up. I ask because you talk about trying to recode it.

4. After dealing with above, try obvious easy stuff like unplugging ABS controller and then plugging back in (power off) see if anything happens.

5. Your steering angle, ESP, and airbag light combo caught my eye by chance, coupled with two of your three airbag codes (ignoring the passenger knee one; in that case check the connector and apply DeOxit type stuff). What is in common to all of those is the steering wheel clock spring. To be clear, the two driver ignitors referenced are both in the main driver's airbag horn area; they aren't the seat one or the knee one given the code particulars. The clock spring part is pricy, and sometimes I find it is just a connector at the back of the ring (there are two in back IIRC) that has backed off/isn't locked down correctly. Thus you can try pulling the steering wheel trim and then trying to check those connectors for firmness. If it isn't the connectors, it is logically then the clock spring unit (which includes the angle sensor). That needs to be in order to deal with a bunch of your codes and lights in any case.

6. Have you driven the car BTW? Like down the road? I ask because to clear the angle sensor code, which I get commonly after disconnecting the battery, I have to drive it basically down the block and turn the steering wheel a bit. Only then does it go away, which in turn clears other codes. Thus, this simple one can keep an ESP fault (or perhaps an ABS one; I don't recall) going when all you need to do is drive a few hundred feet for sensor to reset.

7. Your rear brake code looks stale. What I notice is the voltage is low, which doesn't tie to other voltage reading in your scan that are normal. Try recoding brake pads again. Do it 100% by the book. Including the specific step where you have to cycle the ignition key/VCDS. I mention it since it still has to do with brakes, like ABS. Try to get it out of there (assuming your pads aren't in fact shot).

8. Deal with your rear sensor ABS code. Check the sensor, connector, etc. Obviously you have to resolve that to clean up ABS anyway.

9. And finally, see if ABS is still coding and trouble lights are still on on after all this stuff--including getting to bottom of airbag and angle sensor codes and light since they are in common with the clock spring and that in turn is crucial for ESP. At that point if you still have codes and lights, ABS is looking more like it is DOA. Plus, you have a code that dead nuts says it is defective. If you did run the self test, I bet it may have fried anyway. Still, yes try to recode. Disconnect battery for that matter too and then simply reconnect. But if and only if you have done all the other stuff, then consider running ABS self test. Since I've seen it blow up modules before (or maybe they were blown in reality), I wouldn't do it early. But if it still codes out as defective, you have your unfortunate (and pricy) diagnostic answer.

1. yeah, i never noticed that? how come the dates say 2004? i did a whole auto scan of the whole car, but generally i'll do scans in the each module. like for the ABS, i was trying to erase the code
directly from the 03 module.

2. that was when i was trying to diagnose the fuel pump. first instinct on this car malfunctioning is something electrical, all the mechanics at my work throwing in their 2 cents,
i know i shouldn't listen to anybody. haha

3. no, well i don't recall running any tests in the ABS system. but during my whole fuel pump fiasco, when the job was done i reconnected the battery
terminal and this is when the errors showed up. the first VCDS scan indicated there was an error is my steering angle sensor. i did a reset procedure i found
on ross tech website and that worked out fine. that error went away, but the ABS/ESP light is still on.

4. when you say unplug abs controller as in the locking cabled harness that attaches into the ABS pump? yes, i tried that. left it off for 30 mins, no change.

5. pass air bag was on because the glove box is out and it's disconnected. when i bought the car actually the airbag light was on, and that error indicates n250
air bag igniter. i did find that some people have said to clean/replug the connector, but i just haven't gotten around to it. it's on the list.

6. driven the car about 50 km's in the past two days. i was hoping a drive might wake the module up or something, but nothing as of yet.

7. the brake pad warning has just showed up within the past couple of weeks. haven't had time to dig into that.

i mean yeah i get it, these modules can go. i'm just thinking since this car went through the ringer the past week - fuses pulled from the dash
(i checked to make sure they we're good and properly seated again) fuel pumps, batteries, timing belts, heater cores - just maybe it causing
something not to work properly. everything was more or less fine last week, and since i disconnected the battery it's christmas. i'm just hoping
it's some sort of software setting/programming.

okay, so i did a re-scan. the results are enclosed lower in this post.

the guys down the street have a full ABS module that he lent me to try out.

now, here's my question. if i unplug my current module and plug in this one he gave me (just plugging it in,
not replacing) is this something i could do to see if the car detects it? with this way can i confirm if it's an actual module
problem, not some sort of software/coding problem?

i figured if i plug in the other one he gave me and if i can erase the DTC and it doesn't come back then
i can know for SURE that it needs to replaced? is this suggestible or will something blow up?

here's my scan from last night.

Default I bet you still don't have Bentley....? Feeling Lucky...?

So, here's your clear shot--at either Bentley or a really expensive paperweight. End of internet idea, or if you do good luck on relying on it. The $64 question (actually more like $640 or maybe a grand plus ) is whether you can just separate the electronics from the solenoid assembly. Given you have a presumably good unit in hand, that is Audi parts gold. Well, we know one other poster was busy trying to repair his electronics too, but then we also know his is basically DOA from another thread in last few months. I know I could do it on my C5, but that was a prior mid-90's design lock in, akin to D2 and was also pre-ESP. So, are you feeling lucky? To be clear, no way I would risk testing it loose (electronics separated from unit), and no idea what would happen if you plug in a complete unit that isn't hooked up hydraulically.

Or, you could buy Bentley (or use it if you have it) and look up whether the electronic part can just be separated off, and if so, how to. I would only do it via direct service procedure confirmation myself and with the Bentley I have, would not rely on other posts that are not 100% validated first person successful experience specific to a D3, and definitely not a D2, C5, C6, B whatever. And no, I would not even begin to disconnect all the brake lines and the bleed it all if I don't have to to swap the whole thing in.

And BTW, no idea on coding thiese things either. Bentley...

Something not right with that scan. The summary at the top doesn't match the details.

Clear all codes, switch car off, get out and lock it. Leave it for 20 mins to ensure all systems go to sleep. Then go for a drive, town and highway for 20-30 miles, including a few full throttle runs up to a good speed, a few emergency stops (enough to trigger the abs to check it works), then run another scan and see what you get. A good old fashioned Italian tuneup!

i've tried all the easy stuff right off the bat. this error has been logged for over a week now.
i did find some icy patches to do some hard stops on and i can feel some SLIGHT pedal pumping but
it's not full functional that's for sure.

i tried beating it too. shhhhhh, don't tell anyone here.

Ok, well a recent thread on here with similar symptoms ended up being a corroded ABS module wiring loom. Look it up, and see how that works out.

Quick Reply: ABS control module defective?
