My car has a VARTA battery. AFAIK there is no dealer or supplier in Canada for VARTA. The only way that this battery could have arrived is in the car. Therefore it must be original!!

I should have VCDS in here two days.
I doubt it's the original battery. That's the OEM style battery, but it has been discontinued, according to Audi's parts store. It might yet be available elsewhere.

I called a battery wholesaler - says Varta batteries up here only "come with the cars".

In any case, she locked me out when I went in for milk! Module shutdown. This is after I fully charged the battery using my Bosch smart charger. Voltage is good too 12.6. ps Our new 2015 truck is 12.56.

Lucky I read the owner's manual and remembered "emergency opening". Lifted the handle and I was in. Drove home no issues but the Bosch French Energie brain thinks we are about to deep six. Batt level still at 50% in spite of full charge. No wonder buddy (PO) parked this in his living and sold it pre-winter!!

Another stroke of luck VCDS just showed up tonite so running an AUTOSCAN right now.

Analysis paralysis...

Give it (your battery) up in the vernacular. The battery is crap undependable. No brainer to change it, more so in Northern Hemisphere entering winter. The Bosch battery maintainer/jumper sounds like unwittingly it is becoming a crutch to avoid the easy call here to get a new battery. They are a commodity plain and simple. My rule of thumb: one let down not otherwise explained by my carelessness (too much VCDS time w/ no charger, lights left on, etc) and it's on probation. Second unexplained one in any proximate timeframe and it is gone pronto.

While I'm at it, find a new battery wholesaler. He blew you smoke and you inhaled. That information might have been right, perhaps 20-30 years ago. See pic below. My battery I installed about two years ago when my 2007 vintage one got flaky. Bought it at Rector Audi in Burlingame with a coupon and installed it myself in their parking lot to get my core charge back on the spot. Funny how it says Varta on it. See pic, sticker right by positive terminal. Also note purple sticker saying 7/13; I bought it within a month of that apparent manufacturing date. And no, my 2006 W12 is definitely not a late 2013 in drag either by the wholesaler's book. If you do the math BTW, that means even here in mild weather CA coastal area where car lives most of the time, I got about 6 years out of the prior OE one from a known date when dealer changed it very early on before I bought it CPO. And 4-6 yrs. is about what I figure a battery is good for--across many brands of OE ones--Audi, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, BMW/Mini, etc.

But, I suppose maybe my dealer is selling counterfeit ones on Audi's behalf, or dealer is transshipping them from the Vaterland?? Or more seriously, and the reason he is out to lunch on the issues are variously almost all batteries only come from about three players now (Exide, East Penn and Johnson Controls). Varta are commonly Johnson Controls. And that aside, if you are a Euro battery co.--or rather, really now just a brand name and distributor of battery label stickers run off of pdf files in a print shop pretending to be a Tier 1 supplier given who makes them)--then if your meal ticket accounts like VW Audi, Merc, BMW, etc. are assembling cars in Tennessee or Mexico or wherever, you can darn well bet they long ago figured out how to distribute their branded batteries alongside.

See my prior thread about the big three of batteries if you want to know a lot more than the distributor apparently does: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...-come-2877468/

OK I get the HEX-NET in and all hooked up running scan & everything. At 99% it goes:

"Your Audi A8 is stoned; See your dealer"
" Legalise Marijuana"

My dealer?? My dealer is next door - c'mon this is Vancouver Island CANADA

PS:I am driving 3+ hours to the nearest dealer to pickup the battery of course! I actually called two dealers both are hawking Interstate, & same price $230, which is great. I asked about VARTA they said nope. That's when I called the dealer for Johnson controls, see if I could even get them (Varta batteries). USA you guys got em.

Default The Rap Sheet - whoa...

I think the last time this A8 was scanned is when the Auto Union was formed. Yikes!

SOP on a first time go: save the file just in case (which you have here courtesy of AW if no where else). Then just clear everything. Next, scan again immediately and see what you get, plus in another two or so days. More specifically, at least two cold-hot-cold engine cycles for the latter. Some emissions codes give you two cycles before they throw a CEL for example; might show up in scan earlier I suppose. With those scans in hand you will have a handle on what is actually happening these days instead of who knows when in its old history. Your croaking battery is good for about half a dozen codes all by itself BTW--scattered all over the place where you will find low voltage warnings and quiescent code mumbo jumbo.

A bad battery does not necessarily mean it will affect the voltage. It may be the A-H (current) output might be weak. Through the simple equation of Power = Voltage x Current, you can see how each factor, i.e. power and current can affect power output. Your battery charger might be reading full charge but, it may be possible that the battery itself cannot hold (store) that charge due to worn down elements.

FYI, hooking up VCDS for extended periods of time eats up a lot of battery power especially if your battery is old.

My VW GTI's battery is VARTA branded. You cannot buy it from a battery store. Well, it might be re-branded as something else, who knows. It could only mean that it is the original battery that came with the car.

For some peace of mind, I suggest that you get it changed immediately or suffer the consequences of procrastination. If you're not convinced that your battery is almost dead, go have it load-tested by a technician.

Now that's just not using good deductive reasoning. MP4 already confirmed from his personal experience that it is possible, in some places at least, to get a Varta battery in the U.S. I find it unbelievable that any A8 from 2004 could be driven even semi-regularly and still have the original battery.

If you wanted to be absolutely sure about the battery, you could take it off the car, and take it into your local chain parts store to be load tested. Alternatively, take a voltmeter to the battery and measure what it's voltage is while the starter cranks the motor up. A good battery won't drop a lot from the expected 12.5V it should be at rest, anything under 8V while starting is definitely a bad battery.

I guess if one goes to Audi or VW to buy batteries, they'll end up with VARTA branded batteries. Regardless of whether the battery is circa 2004 or newer, all the symptoms described by the OP point to a battery that does not seem to keep a charge too well. Time for it to get changed.

Keep the economy going in Lyon Station, Pennsylvania. Get a Deka/East Penn AGM battery (Trade name: Intimidator) for your A8. It's a better battery.
