Beloved A8 left me stranded, what the problem be?

See if prior belt service actually even changed the water pump
It isn't an automatic, especially any done under the old extended AudiCare that was available for a CPO purchase. There was a weird window where Audi cut the timing belt interval back to 75K on the 4.2 from what it used to be 95 or 105K or some such. They also sold old extended AudiCare out to 75K before cutting it back later to 65K (it now goes to 75K again, but conveniently after the only timing belt motors left have moved back to post 100K change intervals).
I happen to know this stuff because I bought that extended AudiCare with my CPO W12, and realized if I had a 4.2 it would have covered the belt when they made the service change recommendation--given the wording about covering anything on the normal service schedule. Anyway, it then led to Audi only doing/approving "mini" belt jobs for just the timing belt itself if it fell in that "free service" category, especially on the old RS6 where it first came up routinely even inside of 4/50 because they had a ridiculous 30K belt interval. There are a few old posts back at least several years where a few owners went through the jawboning w/ Audi on it and had to pay for anything beyond the belt itself unless the part was broken/defective/leaking.
