Car died after starting and wouldn't restart.
My '04 A8L died after running for 5 seconds and cranked but would not restart. I had to jump it and it has been fine for 4 days and 1,500 miles of driving. It had sat for 4 days in the cold WV weather while I visited my parents without being started.
The battery is from the dealer and was replaced in July of 2013. I inspected the battery and it looked new and had a sticker on it that said 5/2013. No lights were left on and no warning lights ever came on before or afterwards. I am concerned, does anyone think something is wrong? What happens on these cars when the alternator goes, is it sudden?
Thank you, John B

I just went through the same thing with my 06 A8, and it was the engine speed sensor going out. The first time it did it after sitting for a couple hours it started right up got it home and ran the diagnostic on the sensor and everything was in spec. Had no problems for a week and then it died, put a new one in and have been good ever since.

Maybe called a crankshaft position sensor. I had the same problem with my Audi allroad. Car would start and then die. It would only start again once it cooled down. Replacing the crankshaft position sensor solved the issue: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-...ation-2820425/
I've also had a similar problem due to a faulty coolant temp sensor on the allroad.
Both parts are cheap and easy to replace in one's own driveway (at least on the allroad).

Thank you, I decided to go ahead a purchase a Ross Tech Vag Com cable. Got it for $349 for their website. $20 for shipping, whatever..... This forum has convinced me it is worth the investment. I will carry it in my car on trips.
