Default Cup holder in center console.

How is the cover preloaded? I have pulled the trim and rest several times to swap for round start button and work on MMI connections. But cannot figure out what loads the door to keep it up when closed. It droops a little when closed. It still pops up when released.

There must be some type of spring system that 1 of them has come loose.
there are 4 screwws that undo it from the mmi control trim. When you take the insert out you can then see some gaps down the sides to may be able to see something loose through them. Mine was stuck last week and when i took it out some coins droped out so I did not go any further.

I will pull mine again and figure it out. My wife and kids have locked it up before by cramming oversized cups and glasses in it. It was freed up by getting the linkage level.

That cupholder is one of the most poorly designed aspects of the car. I don't drink coffee in it anymore unless I am prepared to one hand it, especially with the hair-trigger throttle response of the S8...I have dumped coffee everywhere twice.

20oz sealable bottles or nothing for the car ride to work.

Just looked into it a little deeper and it seems there is a problem similar to the screen gears breaking as their is a kit for it.

Not sure if that is the case with yours though..

That "kit" of one gear is for soft opening. It is same for all lids and it works.

Default I hate to admit this.

After 15 months and 13,000 miles of ownership this cup holder lid and changing the fluid in the Torsen center differential is all I have left to do. Everything else works fine and has been serviced.
I ordered the "kit" hope the gear fixes it. I have not pulled the MMI trim in a while.
