Depends on the model I habve an 06 A8 and the cd player only plays true cd's it's a 111A I believe and the 110A's play the MP3's.

+1 only later ones--or ones fixed w/ newer part #--play MP3

How can you tell which one I have without actually burning a CD with MP3s on it.

Might have been a running (intra) model year change. IIRC details are buried in some old TSB. You can also see the part # either by pulling the unit or looking at it via a VCDS/VAG COM scan, and then Google that or check it again current parts listings. What ever it is, I remember my 2006 built in Spring 2005 (very early 2006) has the "older" pre-MP3 one.

I know I made a CD with .wav on it(by mistake) and it did not work which is not surprising.
Maybe it's easier just to burn one.Any advice on the type or if it should be "closed"

Mine is a 6/06 production model and has the older non-mp3 player I think they became standard in 07 or 08.
