Default Electrical Issue -'07 A8L 99.5KMI

Hi Everyone,

I have been a passive reader for all of the years and love this forum as I have been able to solution through a lot of stuff with my A8 by reading and searching through these forums.

Two days ago - we had a massive rain-storm which lasted 2 days in CT. I had been driving my wife's car so I hadn't been in mine during the rainstorm as I have been waiting for my rear pads and rotors to come in so i could do them. Anyway, when i drove into the office yesterday car drive fine. When i left the office, I noticed that there was a slight musty smell in the car and as i was backing up out of my spot - the camera display started flickering, followed by a TPMS error, then an adaptive headlight error, then a parking brake error, and then a headlight range error as I was driving on the highway and then they disappeared and re-appeared periodically during the drive. About 1 mile from my exit - all of the lights appeared again, and the display in the speedo and the MMI screen blacked out and turned back on and i felt the power steering go in and out. (est travel time 10mi) As soon as I pulled in my driveway, I heard some water sloshing and then felt the carpet in the pass footwell was soaked. I have been working to dry the carpet, blotting and wet-vacing and this morning I was going to start pulling the carpet up.

Based on what I have read in a couple of the posts - there are some important modules underneath that footwell and I'm afraid that based on what i experienced on my drive home that the water may have cooked em and now my repair bill could eke into the 5 figures. (which with a 1 yr baby and my wife on unpaid maternity leave for #2 - 5 figures is not happening). Or the abs worst case its royally f***ed.

I do not have a ross-tech and have been weighing the investment given the car's age so i don't have the codes to be able to report on what the errors are. Given from what I have read, there was water sloshing when i turned into my driveway and the location and the car being sealed up makes me think it was the plenum drains or sunroof drains that possibly leaked into the car.

I am kind of unsure of what I should do now. I do not have a local guy that I feel confident with that knows the electronics of the car. I am also unsure If i should call up my insurance and start a possible comprehensive claim in the event i have to take it up to the dealer and have them do surgery.

I'd appreciate any advice that you guys may have. Kinda getting desparate here.

It looks like flood damage. Start with cleaning plenum, heater and roof drains. Lift the carpet (both sides) and dry the area. Than you will need VCDS scan in order to find out which modules has problem. You can get help with that here. If you are lucky it would be just Electric Module and drying might help. Anyways there are all of them available on eBay fairly cheep. Watch for hardware and software numbers. Replacing is not too complicated.

The very first thing you need to do is clean out the drains... Use the search and you'll find plenty of articles on how to do them.

Then you'll need to attempt to dry out the inside of your car and in particular the electronics.

This may require you to revive your carpeting and physically remove and open up the soaked electrical modules or look to replace them. But you really need a vcds to determine the extent of the issues and which module in particular is causing the issue(s).

1) What other modules are underneath the floor or within the plenum area?
2) How much of a PITA is it to remove the carpeting?
3) Where are the plenum and heater drains?

Have your tried using the SEARCH function? Since all the questions you've asked have been answered by others.

1) Almost of them.
2) Remove the seal trim and the third pedal on the drivers side and lift it from sides.
3) Plenum drains are at the plenum bottom a bit hidden by the fan box and heater ones are close to the gas pedal and symmetrical at the other side. There are a few treads with pictures.

+1,2,3,4. As stated, search about drains themselves, including that for plenum the bottom tips can get clogged or basically just get stuck closed from rubber sort of sticking to itself from the lips they have at the final tip.

For a simple how to on plenum to get at much of the underlying cause: at least annually I pull the two halves of the plastic plenum cover off and just start blowing air from a compressor from one side to other. Most recently I added a battery powered leaf blower to the routine for more oomph. Takes maybe 10 minutes of back and forth to chase the leaf crap out of there--up over the top of the recess and out of the car. Invariably there is a lot of plant debris no matter that car is often garaged--besides what you can easily see, often near sides below base of windshield, also essentially under the HVAC box, under the master brake/power unit, etc. Hit it with forceful air and you'll see. Hard to get in there thoroughly with a shop vac BTW for folks thinking that.

If this is a legit case, use a real scanner instead of a phone-toy
