Lubricating the solenoid armature isn't going to help much if there is corrosion in it. The corrosion needs to be removed. If it were mine, I would replace the starter. Fix it once - fix it right.

This is off a Bosch starter, from the boat. The clearance of the solenoid is really tight and that is where the jammed code occurs.
Here's where if you could drill a 1/8" access hole in the spindle gear fork housing, get some lube on the piston you'll be good for another few years DOH!

If a starter turns slow (and battery, electrical is all good), esp when hot, then the stator is binding on the rotor.

The initials NFG on the solenoid armature says it all.

Sorry you guys are weirding me out.

I put those marks on there so on the next boat I fix, I won't be using use this one as a replacement. That is an electricians staple BTW. You keep busted spares just in case you need a bolt or sub-part...for those that are born-yesterday, apparently

Got the starter replaced. Feels like I was raped by the Indy--the original quote was "$750 if its a Bosch starter, $850 if its a Valeo." I asked why it mattered (shouldn't the bolt pattern, etc. be the same??), and he replied that it might be different, so they replace like for like. When I went to pick the car up yesterday, they tried to hit me at $990. I was NOT happy. They could not tell me why it was so different from the original quote, but the guy I picked it up from "was not authorized to offer a discount." I made him get the owner on the phone, and he finally "came down" to $930.

I'm pissed. I don't think the job should have been much more than $750. For $1000, I would have tackled the job myself (allowing for the purchasing of the bars and rental of a hoist).

Sorry, just had to vent. lol. The good news is that my car now starts whenever I need it to

Hello Rhino,
Glad you got you vehicle fixed, as far as Valeo VS. Bosch, as far as I can tell the Valeo is for the 4.2 V8, whereas the Bosch is for the 5.2 V10, and the 6.0 W12, the unit I had previously posted pictures of is a Bosch from a W12 TT from a Bentley GT, in the link below you can see that the rebuilt Valeo is $309.00 with a $75.00 refundable core charge, or the new Valeo at $547.60 and these are the discounted prices, as they list at $412.00 and $742.00 retrospectively, the shop quoted you $850.00 and that is what you should hold them to, or they should have called you to get permission to proceed at the higher price, unless they are going to say the quote did not include tax, even then $850 X .07% = $910.00 depending where you are located tax wise....
So did you get new, rebuilt, and from where, as in dealer VS. say Auto Zone, AZ sells rebuilt for the V8 at $160.00, not that I would use a AZ rebuilt starter on my W12 A8 given the labor involved.

Well temp dropped last nite to just over freezing and guess what? Starter jammed.

I kept attempting to start, then waited a bit for the heat of the attempts to migrate across the starter sol body. Sure enough 5 minutes later - boom, she fires.

I need to be able to access the top of the starter and see the solenoid.

I am thinking of pulling the fender well liner??? From underneath or overhead I can see nothing.

Replace the starter. You have to remove the subframe to access. Even to try and squirt snake oil inside. I feel that will be a futile effort. Then again, what do I know?
