Default MMI Screen Problem

The MMI screen on our 2005 A8 is making a noise that sounds like gears aren't aligned when it goes up or down. I have to physically help it up with a push. More often than not it lowers without me having to do so, but I sometime have to push it when it nears the bottom. I know that replacement MMRI screens are very expensive. Other than this issue, the screen works perfectly. Any advice will be appreciated.

That sounds like a gear problem, Mishar is the one to ask about that. Do a search, there have been plenty of posts on mmi gear replacement.

I am glad to hear that it is a gear replacement rather than the entire unit. I tried to talk her into a 2011/2012 CPO A8, but she kept telling me that she still likes this one too much.

One of the many useful links Mishar lists in his signture is the one for the MMI gear replacement >> MMI Screen Repair Instructions - AudiWorld

It's a common problem in the D3. Good luck.

Default + many

Even us old dogs get MMI gear-itis over the years. Did my 2006 a year or so ago with about 100K miles. My symtpoms sounded just about like what OP mentioned. Misha's gears did it for mine too. Typical Audi German overcomplexity to the design you fight with some to get them replaced, though I do appreciate this is still a beautiful car, both what you see and so much underneath that makes it so. Works perfectly and salutes crisply and quietly to attention ever since it got the gear rebuild.

Just gears, as guys already said. Unfortunately I can't help you anymore, but there are few seller on eBay. Instructions are free. As always.
