i'm just hoping the VCDS can get it to turn on at this point.... then its a matter of hoping the software works, it did lock up the first time, thats what started this mess. I should be considering ordering the oem discs and going to the dealer at this point, they said they would do the update for $100 if i brought them the discs (but they would have had to be oem)

on the bright side, car still runs....

Was the vehicle misbehaving/doing something wrong or something that you didn't like? I'm wondering why you are installing this update in the first place.

Also, like the sticky referenced in my earlier post, for anything critical such as things that affect engine internals (read: timing belt etc.), foundation brakes as well as the complicated electronic systems of the D3's; the great feeling of a low price is soon forgotten when problems occur.

I am not certain if the CD's/DVD's you are using are OEM or not; If they aren't, well, you are experiencing this issue first hand. Even worse is that dealers sell the updates for a reasonable price. That said, I'm a believer of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp.

That said, good luck to you. I wish I could help more right now.

I was missing a few things that i was going to need (so i was told in another thread) i was updating to use the 2015 map and also planned on getting an AMI and bluetooth in the near future, the discs are copys, I have yet to determine that the issue stemmed from the discs, but since everything (including the xm radio) was working properly 5 min before the updates, i have my doubts about the software. i was using a trickle charger to maintain the battery level during the updates and followed the .pdf for updating software too a "T"

I appreciate all the help, im really in over my head at this point, this seems to be an expensive learning curve to say the least

The only thing I can't do with the "old" software in my car is use the new "3-D" style maps. I get along quite well with the 7 or eight year old disk I bought back then from Navteq; then the legitimate supplier that the dealer said I should order it from. I believe they now sell them at the dealers.

I grew up using "old fashioned" Rand McNally printed road atlases and free maps you get at the state highway welcome centers. I hardly used the Nav system in my A8 for the first four years I had the car. One time it came in handy near Chicago when a business I was going to had a sign in the window stating they moved a couple miles away to a so-and-so address. No map and no help how to get there on the sign. I used the nav system to enter the new address and it showed me where to go. This was just before my first smart phone and even then data was expensive. Now the phone is what I use since I get live view of traffic jams so I can avoid them as I'm too old and impatient to sit in stopped traffic these days.

Default Thus, yes get the dealer disks as very next step

Get the dealer disks as very next steps, both the 3360 that messed up and the 4610 later one. Then if it were mine, I would proceed as I suggested in prior reply.

And yes, you are correct, you need 3360 to install AMI. The the latter versions are documented to deal with mostly bluetooth issues (if you have an early 2005, irrelevant), add a little more to the AMI tracks display, add an altitude display, and deal with some French language display issues I have often suspected/joked may be some Quebec language police bust.

No, in this internet era of instant downloads and iOS and all, I would never apply software from some random source. Unsafe sex with your car electronics if you will. The bricked MMI's from the 4140 fiasco also had in common that the software source was ultimately some burned CD IIRC.

By interrupting update (disconnecting battery) you probably bricked it. There may be a chance to save it by stating update from Bootloader. To do so you need access to Hidden Menu.

It looks like your Digital Radio, probably Sirius, doesn't work. Check optical ring connections in the trunk left side and fuses it the fuse panel there. If you can't find anything wrong order an Optical Loop from a dealer and bypass it.

I know this doesn't help but this is a perfect example why I don't mind paying the dealer for 1-1.5hrs of labor to update my MMI. Good luck with the fix.
