I know! Turns out it was a demonstrator car. Audi had it for 2 years before being sold on. I don't know what the standard kit was on this car but I'm presuming ACC and Fingerprint were options as well as the phone. Pretty cool huh?

Works great if you have Parallels or VMware and run a Windows VM, or use Bootcamp.
Have done it on my MBA and MBP.

Yes there is, but it's not available in Europe yet.

Default There are no 3D maps. More...

Updating MMI will not make 3D maps magically appear. Almost all known D3's are 2D. Audi announced 3D maps in a very late year D3 (circa 2009) in Europe; never shipped into U.S. and not clear to me if it ever made it into any volume even in Europe. It was an electronics change too, not just a quick software update trick.

MMI < 500 was viewed by Audi as pretty unstable, and even < 1000. Lots of early TSB's around it, including literally flaky stuff like driving past picket fences and setting off TPMS warnings. Only at the 3000+ level does it get to the last of the known bugs in the sound system software. You also need the 3000 + level to install AMI for music players (Apple, MP3, etc.). The last few updates in the 4000 series were primarily bluetooth related (and some French language police baloney in Canada perhaps); that didn't particularly apply to the first few years' worth that didn't have bluetooth anyway. The 41 level update (or the last one) did add altitude to the MMI map display.

Default Are you sure?

I thought that also involved new hardware intro-ed even post face lift.

I could see OP was in Europe, hence why I indicated that delta and left out all the later digits to the MMI revs. that are market specific.

Later edit: I Googled and quickly found what I was remembering about it--at least the Audi publicity about the substantial D3 MMI rev I was thinking of: Audi introduces the next MMI - Autoblog

As sure as I can be since I tried it myself twice. First on my original 2005 MMI and than it came from Germany with 3D European software F-bas MMI. It works with North American maps, but not perfectly. There is a different set of special destinations so most of NA can't be controlled making map permanently overcrowded. No street names eider (just in 3D). To switch between North American and European MMI software update has to be started from Bootloader.

Stoosh
The Motorola phone module is the same for UK as for Aus. I have changed it to a proper Bluetooth module.

You can simply buy the Bluetooth module 4E0862335 (must be the A8 one with the optic plug) and after you buy the 54 pin plug, you can swap 6 pins and it will work straight away.

Adaptive cruise was an option here from 2003 as we pretty much get Uk spec. Same with fingerprint start (which you have to program in with the USER function in the MMI.

Default Update fail :-(

Firmware is available to download, especially 1100 as its no longer available from Audi. I would download 1100 and then buy the latest CDs from Audi. The process would be,

1) upgrade MMI to 1100 using downloaded version, repeat twice to ensure upgrade complete.
2) use the purchased MMI upgrade kit from Audi and run through CDs 1 and 3 in order, repeating each CD twice to be sure. You will not need CD2 as you do not have the full fat bluetooth.

1100 can be downloaded from here, but you must register first
Audi Resource - MMI Menu
The site is perfectly trustworthy and run on by a member of another A8 forum.

5570 is the latest and last version of the MMI 2G firmware for us in the EU.
I took the car to a VAG specialist today to update the MMi. He called me a couple of hours later to say the car didnt like the updates. He said it came back with "no update found" and when they did a diagnostic the only code it threw out was to do with "CD2" and it not recognising the cd player. The cd player works just fine. Could the Dennison Gateway 500 ipod kit be the problem?
He said he could get help from audi but would need more time with the car. Any ideas?

Cheers guys

Yes.

Remove any 3rd party devices in the MOST ring.
They emulate CD players and the MMI FW update will try to update them and get confused.

Edit: remove from MOST and electrically (CAN bus) to be safe
