I've made enquiries to get my struts re-gassed. As soon as my car gets back to me, I'll be getting them done.
Rock Auto has them too--in the Sachs brand. Often OES for Audi. $70 for pair in U.S. Approx 54 British pounds since they list parts from the UK side too.

Want OEM? Order new ones from Audi. It will be OEM and they aren't that much money. I just replaced mine. After 10 years, they are going to be a little weak. I think I paid about $60 each from the dealer. There were several different part numbers used by Audi so I had to give them the part numbers off my originals. Yes the numbers are different based on which side they are on.

I bought a 2 new struts ~35.00 and asst springs from grainger $15, and rebuilt clutch with violin rosin $3.50. Took a couple hours. Its been working fine over a year. Just a tad slow but I don't know what new was like.

Thanks for posting. My S8 is in Arizona and the warmer it gets the more trouble I have with my trunk opening. I just finished ordering new struts from Rock Auto.

Great to hear. With the new struts, I don't think I need the helper springs on my A8.

What part of town are you in?

My exact symptom. I was very surprised on how hot the struts got when the car was sitting out in the sun.

I have the new (metal) motor and it used to fail to lift the trunk when it's hot outside. I replaced the struts and since then it's been working 100% of the time . I've recently also lubed the hinges just to make things easier for the motor.

I don't have helper springs and the trunk works great. Trunk motor is a year old and I replaced the air shocks/springs last week.
