New 2007 A8 4.2 Sport Owner - Problems Already
Hi Fellow D3 owners,
I recently purchased a silver/black 2007 A8 4.2 WAULV44E47N003165 with 88K miles (photo attached) and had it shipped to me in the Seattle (Bellevue/Redmond) area from Southern California. The previous owner purchased the vehicle from Hoehn Audi in Calrsbad with ~30K miles on it as a CPO and had all of his service done at the dealer or an Indy mechanic called Hugo's European Car Service in Encinitas.
Sorry in advance for a long intro forum post, but I want to get started off on the right foot with my new to me A8. Much appreciation in for any advice on the car after reading my post! I have only put about 500 miles on the vehicle since purchase, and already a little frustrated.
I have owned Audi (1990 Coupe Quattro), Mercedes (1997 E420), Jeep (2002 Grand Cherokee Overland - wife) and Volvo (S60 T5 and my wife's current XC90 V8) vehicles in the past, but it has been several years since I have owned an Audi and am in the process of locating a quality mechanic to work on this vehicle. Referrals appreciated!
I had the car pre-purchase inspected by Hoehn and they noted seaps (minor) for oil/fluids and that the 20" tires needed to be replaced. Front pads ~40%. It needs a new AT shifter ribbon and I found the push button start button doesn't seem to work (stop does). I bought the car.
Most recent work by prior owner: He had the intake walnut blasted + new intake gasket for carbon build up and reset CEL again at the end of February 2016 because of multiple cylinder misfires at Hugo's. December 2015; 85K service at Hoehn, reset CEL, replace upper control arm bushings, replace driver front window regulator, replace trunk lid motor, and replace T-Stat 079-121-115-BA ($81.99 part) on "front of engine" (stuck open with ODIS fault P2181) because car was not warming up (this issue was resolved and the system tested as working correctly). April 2015, Hugo's CEL Thermostat assembly ($99.00 but no part # on invoice - so is this the same items being replaced twice) - Replace thermostat assembly reset adaptions, clear fault memory and retest. Hugo's 3/2015, new battery (H9 110ah) and replaced coolant temp sensor (water temp sender $41.16 part) to fix "coolant system performance malfunction". Hugo's - 8 new spark plugs PFR6W-TG NGK at 76K miles (75k service) 8/2014. Going back further and looking at items that are not standard maintenance; the MMI motor was remounted to not bind, coolant expansion tank replaced, a couple of door trim mouldings were replaced, and all 8 coils were replaced at 38k miles (recall item?)
On delivery, the car had a stow away rat/mouse nest and the critter(s) ate the wiring connecting the harness to the cam sensors on either side of the top of the engine (photo attached). So when the car arrived both the CEL and the EPC lights were on for the electronic system malfunction. The wiring was repaired and everything seemed to be OK, and then the CEL comes back on. I took it through emissions which I failed, and they recorded a P0047 low fuel pressure error.
This CEL went away on its own two days later and I went back and passed emissions. Then a few days later it starts running rough (misfiring) and CEL back on. Car had run smoothly prior. Other items noted, my temperature gauge is intermittent and usually is not operational or takes forever to get to operational temperature.
So I took it to the mechanic I have used recently for other vehicles (general practitioner, but works on a lot of VW/Audi). The car was due for an oil change and I wanted further guidance on the status of the vehicle CEL issues so I had the diagnostic codes dumped. The only thing I have done to date other than repairing wiring is replace tires and TPMS sensors, and had the oil changed.
my current mechanic says, "I have spent a lot of time driving and logging the car and what it is doing. The low pressure pump is fine. The duty cycle time is below 70% if memory serves for the low pressure pump.
At high RPM the high pressure pump has a "specified" and "actual pressure" reading and they need to be within 5 bar of each other and sometimes the difference is significant. I have log files that show this data. We need to replace both high pressure fuel pumps to fix this issue.
The misfire in the engine is coming from the leaking intake manifold. There are several leaks in the manifold and some of the leaks I can't do anything about. The leak between the upper and lower halves I can fix but the others I cannot. I recommend a new manifold.
The thermostat needs to be replaced and once it is, and the codes are cleared, the check engine light will not come back on for this fault. To fix it, the whole front of the vehicle needs to be removed.
There is an oil leak under the intake manifold. I see oil pooling up underneath. The oil is probably from the oil filter housing. I won't be able to confirm 100% until the manifold is off."

I recently purchased a silver/black 2007 A8 4.2 WAULV44E47N003165 with 88K miles (photo attached) and had it shipped to me in the Seattle (Bellevue/Redmond) area from Southern California. The previous owner purchased the vehicle from Hoehn Audi in Calrsbad with ~30K miles on it as a CPO and had all of his service done at the dealer or an Indy mechanic called Hugo's European Car Service in Encinitas.
Sorry in advance for a long intro forum post, but I want to get started off on the right foot with my new to me A8. Much appreciation in for any advice on the car after reading my post! I have only put about 500 miles on the vehicle since purchase, and already a little frustrated.
I have owned Audi (1990 Coupe Quattro), Mercedes (1997 E420), Jeep (2002 Grand Cherokee Overland - wife) and Volvo (S60 T5 and my wife's current XC90 V8) vehicles in the past, but it has been several years since I have owned an Audi and am in the process of locating a quality mechanic to work on this vehicle. Referrals appreciated!
I had the car pre-purchase inspected by Hoehn and they noted seaps (minor) for oil/fluids and that the 20" tires needed to be replaced. Front pads ~40%. It needs a new AT shifter ribbon and I found the push button start button doesn't seem to work (stop does). I bought the car.
Most recent work by prior owner: He had the intake walnut blasted + new intake gasket for carbon build up and reset CEL again at the end of February 2016 because of multiple cylinder misfires at Hugo's. December 2015; 85K service at Hoehn, reset CEL, replace upper control arm bushings, replace driver front window regulator, replace trunk lid motor, and replace T-Stat 079-121-115-BA ($81.99 part) on "front of engine" (stuck open with ODIS fault P2181) because car was not warming up (this issue was resolved and the system tested as working correctly). April 2015, Hugo's CEL Thermostat assembly ($99.00 but no part # on invoice - so is this the same items being replaced twice) - Replace thermostat assembly reset adaptions, clear fault memory and retest. Hugo's 3/2015, new battery (H9 110ah) and replaced coolant temp sensor (water temp sender $41.16 part) to fix "coolant system performance malfunction". Hugo's - 8 new spark plugs PFR6W-TG NGK at 76K miles (75k service) 8/2014. Going back further and looking at items that are not standard maintenance; the MMI motor was remounted to not bind, coolant expansion tank replaced, a couple of door trim mouldings were replaced, and all 8 coils were replaced at 38k miles (recall item?)
On delivery, the car had a stow away rat/mouse nest and the critter(s) ate the wiring connecting the harness to the cam sensors on either side of the top of the engine (photo attached). So when the car arrived both the CEL and the EPC lights were on for the electronic system malfunction. The wiring was repaired and everything seemed to be OK, and then the CEL comes back on. I took it through emissions which I failed, and they recorded a P0047 low fuel pressure error.
This CEL went away on its own two days later and I went back and passed emissions. Then a few days later it starts running rough (misfiring) and CEL back on. Car had run smoothly prior. Other items noted, my temperature gauge is intermittent and usually is not operational or takes forever to get to operational temperature.
So I took it to the mechanic I have used recently for other vehicles (general practitioner, but works on a lot of VW/Audi). The car was due for an oil change and I wanted further guidance on the status of the vehicle CEL issues so I had the diagnostic codes dumped. The only thing I have done to date other than repairing wiring is replace tires and TPMS sensors, and had the oil changed.
my current mechanic says, "I have spent a lot of time driving and logging the car and what it is doing. The low pressure pump is fine. The duty cycle time is below 70% if memory serves for the low pressure pump.
At high RPM the high pressure pump has a "specified" and "actual pressure" reading and they need to be within 5 bar of each other and sometimes the difference is significant. I have log files that show this data. We need to replace both high pressure fuel pumps to fix this issue.
The misfire in the engine is coming from the leaking intake manifold. There are several leaks in the manifold and some of the leaks I can't do anything about. The leak between the upper and lower halves I can fix but the others I cannot. I recommend a new manifold.
The thermostat needs to be replaced and once it is, and the codes are cleared, the check engine light will not come back on for this fault. To fix it, the whole front of the vehicle needs to be removed.
There is an oil leak under the intake manifold. I see oil pooling up underneath. The oil is probably from the oil filter housing. I won't be able to confirm 100% until the manifold is off."

With all the work done involving CEL and intake manifold work on an 88K miles in the last few months at a Hugo's place and you still bought the car? Anyhow, it's done.
If it were me, I would study and tackle one problem at a time.
1. How do you know the leaks exist? Did the leaks contribute to the rough running? "It was running smoothly".
2. Why Thermostat needs to be replaced? Temperature stuck high or low? Temperature gauge erratic?
3. CEL is the culprit of all these work before and it didn't fix it, may be that's why the owner sold the car. You and your shop may have to shotgun to replace everything and it may not even fix the CEL. Since it never happens to me, I haven't studied about CEL, it might just be something simple. Audi A8 is a complex car with tons of sensors and control systems, it's hard to troubleshoot, but before you start tearing down an 88k miles engine to replace things that may not even fix the problem, study it first. The biggest mistake of the owner is to have HUGO to mess around with the intake manifold. I would not buy any car with any manifolds removed or replaced, it's just me.
4. It just showed that spending money for a dealer to inspect the car, just a waste of money. Buy from an honest owner who would tell you what's wrong with the car is the best.
