New to us 08 D3 S8 in Ice Silver
Imported it and drove it home last night! What a car. I will use this thread to detail any updates and troubles I have with the car as to not create a 1000 new threads. Kind of a log really.
My first gripe about the S8..the short gearing in the differentials, or short OD gear! jeez man you dont need to be revving at 2700 rpm doing 75 mph...no wonder the mileage sucks!
Other than that...I thought my ls400 interior was quiet, this is definitely an order of magnitude quieter.
The car:
2008 Audi S8, Ice Silver Metallic on Black Valcona leather.

i can shift it by the flappy paddles and on the stalk.
75 is 120ish kph and this one revs the same way ours does.
I assume the A8 revs lower due to different gearing, but they share the same trans.

I've rechecked numbers and it seems you are closer to the right speed/rpm. S8 at 2700 rpm runs 78 mph in 6th speed. A8 at the same rpm goes 96 mph. Gearing it that way they achieved better acceleration. That's what "S" is about, not fuel consumption. 
S8 would theoretically go 214 mph at 7000 rpm in 6th gear. For that it would need close to 1000 HP. As it is it is fastest (without limiter) in 5th gear 171 mph.

I am reading MMI newest version for 2G is 5570 yes?
Dealer wants $250 for the discs and cant see which version they would be ordering.
I read people get these discs from audi for $10???
Mainly looking to have 3d maps and have ability to connect USB stocks for music in the car.
Currently running 4140

That is for european market cars. USA current version is 4610. Part# 4F0-998-961. You can buy it from many reputable sources. Beware some are selling burned copies which can malfunction during install and cause issues. You also have to upgrade map discs but I'm not sure how new they need to be in order to do the 4610 upgrade. Even with that you do not get 3d maps in the USA. The only way to get 3d maps is to upgade to a D4 . Not sure about the usb to AMI with the upgrade as my D3 didn't have AMI.

finally did a full system scan. Also lowered the front 10 mm. and did and alignment (good for alignment, the toe was wayyyy out of whack with the busyed outer tie rod, i replaced it but had no real way of knowing what was supposed ot be right). feels much better now.
here are the results. looks like it did have a midfire back in may once or twice.
carbon clean the intake and sonic clean the injectors eventually. but so far engien runs very smooth.
i di smell some oil, looks like the VC have a tiny seep near the rear. enough that there is dirt stuck to it, but no fresh oil that i can see. need to take the belly pn off and give it a good look over some day.

here are the results. looks like it did have a midfire back in may once or twice.
carbon clean the intake and sonic clean the injectors eventually. but so far engien runs very smooth.
i di smell some oil, looks like the VC have a tiny seep near the rear. enough that there is dirt stuck to it, but no fresh oil that i can see. need to take the belly pn off and give it a good look over some day.

Lot of stuff in there. Not uncommon, some stuff I'm not familiar with in there, but these things seem to generate codes randomly from time to time, and it's been at least a year since that one was cleared. Sounds like a couple minor things going out, maybe, but nothing serious that I see. See if any of them come back after clearing, I suppose.

Few things from this weekends roadtrip,
Crusing 70mph for 1 hr mileage was 22.5,
Crusing 80 for 1 hr mileage was 21.
In downtown traffic...12mpg...glad i dont live there and only have to visit. Its all 60mph roads around us here
this is by far the quietest and sure footed high speed driving i have ever done. What a brilliant machine. The dual pane windows are amazing.
Had it alined on a nice hunter inground unit, and balnced the tires. Its tome for new ones but i still have a bit of driving to do on these ones. Well worrth the time and few dollars for a super smooth ride.
But, used quite a bit of oil in these 800 miles we did. I made sure it was at the max line on the dip stick before we left, and got a low oil warning near home, so i put in half a quart to bring it back to the stock level. Really, the warning will go off with it half a quart low? Owners manual states wait 2 minutes for the oil to drain down. I dont think I waited that long. On the dipstick when i pulled it out the oil was at the MIN level.
No way the engine is hurt, thing pulls way too good and is very smooth. I suspect the PCV or oil mist separator contraption is to blame. Pulled the oil cap off and it has a very strong vacuum there at idle-leads me to suspect the valve is stuck open with gunk.
Does anyone have a crankcase vacuum spec for this engine ?
It looks like on the v10, the PCV and oil separator is right there beside the bank 1 throttle body, easily acessable..
