Default Offset/tire width question

I'm playing around with different wheel widths of an 18 inch wheel and trying to make up the gap between it and the fender. I am doing this because my 15mm spacers always cause a vibrations so I would like to just get wider wheels. My questions is if my stock wheel has a 45mm offset and is 8.5 wide do I take the difference in wheel width and chop it in half and add that to the offset to calculate how much closer to the fender the outside of the wheel will be? Hate having my baby looking like a hippo from the rear.

Are you using hub centric type spacers from a reputable manufacturer?

Your calculation is right, but you can do better than that if you are willing to buy wider tires too. You can keep 45 mm offset, go to 9.5" rims and add 30 mm to the tire width also going for a 5% lower ratio. For example: if you have 255/45x18 go for 285/40x18 and 18x9.5 ET45 rims. This link will help you.
