I didn't say a D4 4.0T wasn't better, I said it's not 5 times better, which is what one costs over what my D3 is worth.

You are 100% correct. I just have D4 on the brain as I'm in the process of buying one.

I was looking at a 'newer' D4 as well. What's the deal with the shrunken trunk??

They moved a bunch of stuff between the rear seat and trunk. Facelift models did make a bit more room, though.

Fortunately I don't really need a giant trunk. I really don't need an L either but I just like the feeling of driving the bigger car.

+1. Designer is still doing time at the Siberian test facility, in charge of optimizing toilet bowl space layouts on camper vans. Dumbest design move on D4. On facelift I don't notice it nearly as much as I used to opening trunks on pre facelift showroom cars.

Bet you won't see the mistake on the D5. Or rather, "our engineers did zer usual fabulous job of optimising spaces not just ver you zee them but below the crisp yet flowing surfaces as vell..." Among variety of airbrush cliches you can usually count on the Audi PR flaks (and CEO) to adopt in the product spin.

Default I don't intend to replace the timing belt.

Sad but it's not worth it for a car worth $2k tops, oil leak, Airbag light on, rear suspension clunk, so she will be driven till she dies 188k and I believe belt was done at 120k. Did take a look at it a while ago had to replace a fan clutch bearing, rubber looked OK.

Perhaps I rub the belt with some olive oil or magic fairy oil but place your bets folks I don't do a lot of mileage per year 6k, so who knows ......

I hope to prove those 75k belt changer kill joys wrong! 😈😈😈😈 she goes on some big trips to the Colorado mountains so I'll invest in a towing plan I think. Not that that will necessarily help, I once hit some black ice and slid my car off the road in southern Utah and had to get it flatbeded back to Denver for $450. The car was worth about 1000!

You can rarely tell visually if a timing belt is about to go. It just breaks and it's all over. For the benefit of others reading your post, I'm guessing you were kidding but nothing should be used to lube the belt. Methinks that would be a huge no-no.

See some of my old threads that discuss D3 timing belt life. The torches & pitchforks were brought out and others who wanted to tell me how to spend my money said if I don't replace the timing belt at 75,000 mile intervals; I should not own a D3 A8.

I just did the timing service on my A6 2.7t @100k miles. It had obviously not been done before. In fact everything looked pretty good except for one idler pulley bearing. It looked pretty rough and didn't feel quite right. I suspect it would have failed in the near future.
