so basically as dvs dave says I agree with.
But I think all you have to do is swap out the light sensor for rain light sensor plus new gel pad. Later model 4E0 910 279 with at least Q on the end.
Wiring should be ok as is only plus, minus and data ( data to 4E0 910 279 ) is already there.
Really need to id the sensor as I think there are two types of setups.
All depends how much you really want auto wipers.
Took me weeks from scratch.

To be very clear about this, I will write out what I have learnt doing this mod, compiling information from several forums.

Basically the pre-facelift cars don't have a rain sensor until 05 production. If your central electronics module has an E at the end of the part number, it will not support coding for the rain/light sensor. You can try and code it but it will error out. This means you will have to replace it with a newer one. L through to S are fine apparently. Mine has Q on it.
You will also need to recalibrate the power steering column as it will lose its memory and wont adjust until it gets a reset using VCDS.

If you have auto lights, you won't need to change the switch, just the sensor and the sensor plug. Audi use the same cable to connect the sensor to the roof electronics module, for both the light only and the RLS. They just supply an adapter as the sensor end plug is different.

These are the part numbers

Rain and light sensor ref: 8K0 955 559 A
Sensor cable ref: 4E0970 291
Audi adapter: 1C0 973 119 B

I had to run the data wire directly to the central electronic module but the other two wires supplying power and earth to the sensor were at the roof module plug. Running a wire down to the central electronics matches the Audi factory wiring diagrams. the data wire goes down to the yellow/white stripe wire at the central electronic 09 module and it is a splice connection.

If your car has automatic lights before the sensor went in, then you will have to recode the roof module. This is how it works.

The G399 Light only sensor keeps its coding in the roof module.
The G397 rain and light sensor keeps its coding in the central electronic 09 module.

If you have a rain and light sensor, then you have to have NO coding for the light sensor in the roof module.

If your car had no sensors, then you will also need a switch with Auto written on it. This part is plug and play. Try to find one with the aluminium package ring on it as it looks better.

Central Electronic Coding:

Coding the control unit

The code is composed as follows:

0 X X X X X X : Blank

0 X X X X X : Footwell light fitted as lamp
1 X X X X X : Footwell light fitted as LED

0 X X X X : Halogen headlights or halogen headlights without LED daylight driving lights
1 X X X X : Bi-xenon headlights*
2 X X X X : Bi-xenon headlights without LED daylight driving lights
3 X X X X : Bi-xenon headlights with LED daylight driving lights and AFS
4 X X X X : Bi-xenon headlights with separate 21W halogen daylight driving lights and AFS

0 X X X: Without automatic driving lights (AUTO)
1 X X X: With automatic driving lights (AUTO) with light sensor -G399**
3 X X X: With automatic driving lights (AUTO) with rain and light sensor -G397

0 X X: Without daytime running lights
1 X X: With daylight driving lights

0 X: Daylight driving lights not selectable via MMI
1 X: Daylight driving lights selectable*** via MMI (default: Off)
2 X: Daylight driving lights selectable*** via MMI (default: On)

2 : Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark)
3 : USA
4 : Canada
5 : Vacant

6 : Vacant

7 : Special-purpose vehicles

*Applies only to vehicles up to and including part number index E
**Sensor -G399 is coded in the roof electronics control unit -J528
***Only if daylight driving lights coded (3rd digit from right = 1)

ROOF MODULE CODING:

The code is composed as follows:

Serial no. Numeric value = Designation

1. 0 = Optional extra
2. 1 = Standard
3. 0 = Sun roof not fitted - Pr.no. 3FA
4. 2 = Steel/aluminium sun roof fitted - Pr.no. 3FD
5. 4 = Glass sun roof - Pr.no. 3FE
6. 6 = Solar sun roof - Pr.no. 3FR
7. 0 = Tilt/slide sun roof recirculated air closure not active
8. 8 = Tilt/slide sun roof recirculated air closure active
9. 0 = Rear/side roller blind not fitted - Pr.no. 3Y0/3Y4
10. 16 = Rear roller blind fitted - Pr.no. 3Y2
11. 32 = Rear and side roller blind fitted - Pr.no. 3Y8
12. 0 = Driver identification (fingerprint) not fitted
13. 64 = Driver identification (fingerprint) fitted - Pr.no. 4K5/4K6
14. 0 = Lighting profiles not active; Pr.no. QQ0/QQ2
15. 128 = Lighting profiles active; Pr.no. QQ1/QQ3
16. 0 = Garage door opener not fitted - Pr.no. VC0
17. 256 = Garage door opener fitted - Pr.no. VC1
18. 0 = Light sensor not fitted
19. 512 = Light sensor fitted - Pr.no. 8K9

ST Important The light sensor -G399 should not be confused with the rain and light sensor -G397. The rain and light sensor -G307 is coded in the onboard power supply control unit -J519. If the rain and light sensor -G307 is fitted the light sensor must not be coded in the roof electronics control unit -J528.

21. 1024 = EC interior mirror fitted - Pr.no. 4L6
22. 0 = Climate sensor not fitted
23. 2048 = Climate sensor fitted
24. 0 = Left-hand drive - Pr.no. L0L
25. 32768 = Right-hand drive - Pr.no. L0R

Rain sensor and Rain/Light sensors difference comes from an option, either you have ACC and large driver`s display in dashboard, and therefore the reason why sensors are different totally, no change getting these option with only coding
