The cost of VCDS has been worth every penny. I'm test driving a car this weekend that i'm trying to talk myself out of buying and VCDS will make the trip with me for diagnostic purposes.

I've been using VCDS since it was VAG-COM
If you're planning to use VW and Audi cars for a long time, I would price the VCDS in the purchase of the car, the only draw back with VCDS is you have to have a Windows OS laptop.
How many times do I use the $349 VCDS a year? once or twice or none.
If the VAG505 can retract the ePiston to install new pads, read/reset error codes, I think it's efficient. You don't carry your laptop with you all the time, but you can carry this one in the glove box all the time.
The less you can do with the codes, the less chance for you to screw up your cars. Then again, people get bored with their cars, feel a waste of money buying the VCDS, they like to utilize the $349 device more to get the money worth out of it.
Cheers,
Louis

Remember, the VCDS cable is an investment you can get 80% of your money back easily reselling it here when you're done with it. It's like a long term rental for a nominal fee, really.

Unless Audi changes something in the future to make VCDS obsolete I can't imagine getting rid of it. But you are correct they are very easy and quick to sell for at least 80%.

VCDS on a test drive? I love mine, I know what it can do- and I'm not sure I'd let someone I didn't know hook up their personal computer to a car I was trying to sell.
Maybe after a deposit, but certainly not on a test drive.

If someone refused to let me hook it up, I'd have to walk, without exception or hesitation. I've got rules, and everytime I stray, I pay with some combination of blood, sweat, tears, and cash.

If someone refused to let me run a diagnostic scan on a car I was looking at purchasing I would definitely walk away. What are they hiding? In this case it's a $47K price tag so no scan = no sale. I probably won't buy this car anyway but if I do decide to move forward it will be scanned before I sign anything.
