I does look like they are not fully seating in the closed position, at least they are not broken yet though.
But the good news is pullin the manifold apart is a job that is diy possible.
The picture I posted of the broken flaps is from a friends car that he bought cheap, he had no prior mechanical experience but with a bit of gentle persuasion and using the workshop manual he pulled the manifold, stripped it, removed all the flap valves, decoked the intakes while it was off and it's all back together running like a champ.

Did he remove the flaps? What method was used to clean the intakes?
My car is weak at low rpms (under 2000), my plan is to get a new intake manifold and clean the intake ports.
According to workshop manual did you have to remove the bumper cover and the radiator get access to the front of the intake manifold?

To get the manifold off it would be easier with the front end in service position but is doable with it still in situ, the bracket that secures the knock sensor plugs at the front of the manifold is what will hang up removal so once you've done that it's easy for the rest, just be sure that the interface between the head and manifold is clear of debris as once the manifold is lifted clear anything lying there can drop into the intakes.
Yes the manifold was pulled apart and the flaps removed.
For decoke it was all done by hand with plastic scrapers and brass wire brushes and heavy duty degreaser.
I would try to get a hold of berrymans Chem dip if your going to do it.

Didn't he experience performance loss without a properly working manifold?
I am also investigating the possibility to put together a walnut shell blasting eq. I think I am better to replace the fine oil separator also.

Changed mine last year.
The flaps were intact but the end that hooks into the aluminum was broken. Not the flap but a piece of the intake had broken off. Very lucky it didn't do catastrofic damage. I thought about using Devcon or the sort but after cleaning the carbon I went ahead with a new intake. I sourced one out of Vancouver at the cost of $3200+.

I saw they had em for audi 2.0t i take ports. Dont know if the 4.2 and 5.2 are the same or sinilar enough shape, i assume not. But that bmw deal is mighty fine. Just stick it on, wiggle it around, bar engine over and move onto next one.
Devcon is a higher end 2 part epoxy.
