Default Shifter cover plate

My shifter cover plate is disintegrating as I type. The part number is 4E1713187. The replacement ordered arrived as a 4E1713187A.
Just ordered one from a source the lists both, the A version is cheaper.
Considering how mine is crumbling on a 2005, the other cars with this part, 2004 and early production 2005 must suffer the same fate.
How many have had the cover plate fail on 2006+ D3 models?

There is a very recent thread about this issue. I'll try and dig up a link.

Installed the
New cover plate in my 2005 today. I was told the newer "A" version would require a 300.00 part to work by a good dealer.
Finally installed and it works perfectly. So if you have one falling apart the cheaper new part looks like it will work in any D3.
