I just thought as well that the contacts at the end of travel (the mains) on the solenoid plunger might be corroded too, but that doesn't explain the sensitivity to temp.
Once the magnetic field gets the plunger moving she should snap the electrical mains in pretty hard as it thrusts the starter gear into the fly. But there not much inital moving force on these things (solenoid/plungers)
