I just reproduced the error - finally - it is fuel pressure.

When cold the car fires at around 240bar, when hot and 'heat soaked' the fuel pressure struggles to get above 48bar on the first key turn, second key turn and sometimes it goes - took my eye off the ball and didn't spot what the pressure did (problem is that VCDS comms fail when you reset the ignition to try again). I'm just heading out for another stab at it (laptop battery died).

I persisted today because yesterday at a garage it failed to start at all and required the use of a jumper battery - which is something that I find extremely embarrasing.

It's had a new filter - but it's going to get another one.

I doubt it's the pressure regulator - seems more like either the high pressure pump is struggling or is being starved - once started the car drives faultlessly.

Any ideas.
