like when i select AUTO is sets the fan at 3-4 speed. the car parked and idling
for 20 mins with it on AUTO, there was hot air coming in, but the fan isn't really
blowing it in hard.
if i dial it up to like 9-10, i'll blow hot for a minute and then get progressively
colder till there's nothing. while driving there is more or less always nothing.
generally everyone has the opposite problem. no heat at idle, but heat while
driving. something is nutty here!

There must be the temperature sensor somewhere that's
bad or loose or covered with dirt or something. It does seem like everything works, except the heat vent flap redirect the wrong air while driving. There are so many sensors and motor on this car.
Cheers and good luck,
Louis

that's why it's hard to tell. there is no codes at all in HVAC modules
when i check with the vagcom. that's why i'm thinking it might be
mechanical.
my timing belt job is basically due, i'm just wondering if i should just
dive into that, change thermostat/waterpump - cross my fingers. i only
have to freeze my nuts off for another 2 months. lol

Are you sure the blower motor is running at high speed when manually set to the highest number? This sounds like the typical bad brushes on the blower motor. There are threads on this. I replaced mine a couple of years ago because of no output.

I've lost all warmth on the passenger side.
Everything blows normal. Just no heat.
The only place I get heat from is Driver Feet.
and
when set on DEFROST I get heat from Driver dash vent closest to window ONLY.
Switch back off Defrost and that vent goes cold too.
Summary.
Fan works fine all settings and positions.
Always heat at driver feet only. All settings
Only other position that gives heat is driver Dash ONLY vent closest to window.
On a thread I started it has been suggested to bleed system of possible air
then go troubleshooting from there

hahahh welcome to the wonderful world of D3's.
i knew that when this car breaks that it's either be a disaster or
going to cost big money to fix. this is the only instance where i
DON'T know exactly what the problem is, so i don't even know what
to throw my money at!

a shot in the dart - reset the mmi
it does seem like the Control box gives out wrong signals to vent controller... Did anyone modify the MMI settings (trying to be savvy?) using VCDS by any chance?
cheers,
Louis

i've must of tried bleeding it a dozen times in the past two weeks.
opened the bleeders in the raintray, let it run with the coolant reservoir
cap off. i ordered a replacement cap just incase/to try.
one thing i can say is when i got the car, it had the the MMI software version
since probably the car was delivered in 05. no one had ever updated it and i
was installing a AMI module.
so i did the updates with software i downloaded online. but during the update
it had a lot of trouble reading the discs. i could hear the CD changer making
lots of noises trying to read the disc. i did have to retry a lot of the install quite a
bit while it was installing, but once it finished it seemed everything was in order.
is it possible that it may have corrupted some software/update for the HVAC?
