Anybody used anything in lieu of the crane lock tool? Will a bolt work?
Not a bolt. Use the correct tool. It will pay for itself the first use.

+1

Last guy posting who even used the correct tool managed to crack the surrounding (aluminum) block area. Feeling lucky? Probably only costs a couple grand for a used motor of quasi unknown history plus the $1k+ R&R... Yep, correct tools + technique.

Yes be VERY careful when you use the locking tool. Its a pain to get to but if it takes force to thread in then STOP. YOU WILL CROSS THREAD IT. I was very fortunate to not destroy my block but i was able to seal the chipped area. Good luck and congratulations on doing this diy.

I agree. This looks like more that I want to do at this stage in my life.

Mishar or Mister Bally

How long did it take you to complete the job?

It took me two days of lazy slow motion work. But I was 63 at the time.

1st time took ten hours over several days.

2nd time: 4-5 hours.

Probably similar for me on my A6 4.2, excluding other things I might end up doing at same time since I was in there, or separating out the belt only part of the job when I did deeper dives like a cylinder head pull.

I tip my hat to you guys! I love to tinker and learn new skills but man this looks intense. I'd be down to help a buddy in his car but leading the evolution on my own car...I don't think so!

Happy New Year to you all! I wish to all a lot of troublefree and joyfull miles/km in our loved A8!
Mishar, that's an excelent thread. May I ask what will happen if one skips this: "8. Place 5 mm Alan key (arrow 1) with tensioner blocking pin in place (arrow 2)"
Will it affect timing of camshafts and to what extend?
Also if you want to change camshaft seals, what will happen with the position of washers - will they loose it or do they have fixed position to the camshaft?
Thanks, Emil.

Skipping #8 would not affect timing but it may affect tension if the tensioner gets to eider end position.

Washers have fixed position to camshafts.
