Valve Train/ Head noise
Bought my '06 4.2 D3 just a couple months ago but a few weeks ago I noticed a slight noise coming from it that almost sounded like a whine. Within a week it turned into more of a tapping noise clearly coming from the passenger side head. Immediately brought it to my mechanic who pulled the valve cover and noticed that the cams were pretty dry, but he can not find the source of the noise. He said the tensioner was perfect. Timing belt was just changed 20k ago. Car has 106k on it now. Any ideas?

That oil is NOT vag approved oil.
The 10-40 may be the reason why the cam area looks dry. I know of one engine where the owner ran a heavier non VAG approved oil. The camshafts were worn out at about 80k miles.
Assuming you have a 4.2 engine, the VAG spec is 502 00.
If it doesn't say "VAG 502 00" on the label, it isn't the correct oil.
