I can't see how the one on the right hand photo side does anything with an arm that long!?

You are right. It can't do anything. That's not original arm. There are aftermarket aluminum arms available. Just search the forum. Also check if the flaps are stuck.

Wrong arm size installed, as stated by mishar.

There are two different lengths; 2 inch arm and 1 inch arm. On the D2 models with 4.2 engines the A8 uses the 2 inch arms, while the S8 uses the 1 inch arms. There must have been a design change, between the D2 and D3 converting the A8 arms to the 1 inch length.

See link below for arms mishar mentioned.

Good luck.

Gruvenparts.com out of Atlanta sell them. Really nice guys/good customer service. I've used their arm and also the cooling pipe came from them

Excellent, good to know I can spot stupidity by PO!
So to be clear is only the right arm wrong (should by 1inch), so I need a replica of the left one (same on both sides?).

Yes the right arm needs the 1 inch arm. When your car is turned off the pods should be extended or look like the left one in your photo.

Changing out arms should be pretty easy. Just pry off old arm and press in new arm. It's a ball and socket set-up.

Good luck!
